Do you always receive a message when your drivers licence is ready?

So I'm new here and hope I'm posting this in the right place. I passed my drivers test on the 19 of March and was told that my license should take 8 weeks until ready to be collected, so after passing this time period I was wondering should I go to the DLTC to check if it is ready or should I wait for an SMS saying it's ready for pick up? Do you always get a message upon the arrival of the card? Oh and I live in Durban. . . if that of any useful information. . .

I've never received that message.

I didn't get a message... go check after 8 weeks. They had a problem for a while where they couldn't send out notifications

I have to drive 75 minutes (one way) to go get my licence. I can't just "go and check". Is they any way we can make sure before we go there?

You should receive a notice via mail. IF the DLTC actually tears that portion off and mails it to you and IF the Post Office then actually delivers the notice.

Problem is that if the licence lays there for 120 days, it get destroyed. I don't trust them enough to make sure I get the notice in time.

Yes
I have received the sms after doing a renewal, but like the other guys have said.
If nothing coming through in form of SMS, then you can go and check.

Thank you for all the replies. I don't live to far out from the DLTC so I'll go check if its there within the week :)

I did try this about two days ago and have not received a reply, unfortunately.

In Cape Town you can just call the licensing department where you applied and ask them if it's ready. Sounds crazy I know, but why don't you just do that?

Yeah - tried that a few times; mostly the phone just rang unanswered.
the few times it was answered they either hung up straight away or were less helpful than 3 year old washing dishes.

Also never got a sms - took 3 trips but eventually it arrived and was able to collect it without any fuss.
(applied in November and got it in February)

edit - this was at Ottery in CT fyi

Nope i got nothing. went there and it was there.

I think it relies on a human to send the message. Which means actually DOING work, so forget it.
