Do you keep a monthly budget?

I do and it is nothing grand but just a simple DIY Excel Sheet. However, I also double check the amounts once a month and adjust the sheet if need be. This doesn't take me longer the odd 10 minutes to scroll through the deductions / read my emails for price changes.

I put away a set amount for investing as soon as I get my paycheck and then regulate spending based on what is left.

The investment amount varies a bit if I know I need to spend more on specific expenses during the month, but I always put away something.

There are some pretty good budget templates for excel out there too, or so I've heard.

Been using MS Money for 25 years now

Only keep budget on debit orders and/or monthly payments I make as EFT.

All others things such as spending on entertainment, fuel, etc I don't.

When I look at my smart budgeting on the FNB app I just close it sometimes, as it breaks my heart based on the amount I spend some months.

My main total I look at is the amount in my bank account at the end of the month, if I still have XXX in my bank account at the end of the month it is a win, as all savings and extra payments to bond etc are done on pay day.

I keep a mental budget, know how much I have, what my expenses are and what should be in the bank at the end of the month after all payments are done and purchases made.

Probably the best. I have that, and a buffer amount or up to here spent point (to avoid emptying account or going to where it's just not lekker, haha) where I measure my planned expenses against.

Basically do the same in an Excel spreadsheet ... Budget is set per month (for the normal recurring stuff that needs to be paid). As the money leaves the accounts, the balances get updated, and what has been paid get removed from the "actuals" column.

Yeah. Simple spreadsheet that the SO updates regularly. Started it yonks back to help keep track of finances

Amazing how you spend money on schit without even realising. Putting it down in black and white is the only way to see it

My month-to-month I’m okay at sticking to budget.

My problem is long term budgeting. So I’m saving up to eventually replace my car, and just withdrew from that because I needed to get an Xbox and go on holiday.

Simple spreadsheet, mine and SO's incomes combined, less expenses (investment, school fees, debit orders, groceries), we put aside a few bucks each for personal spending, the rest goes into savings.

We do this monthly and try and cater for adhoc items e.g. birthdays, holidays etc.

We stick to it about 80% of the time
