I understand that ADSL modems have firewalls built in, but what if you are Running Windows 7 and connecting via cell c dongle, do you need to install a firewall or is there one already built in.
How vulnerable are you to attack if you're just a home user and aren't running one?

As far as I am aware Cell C doesn't allow incoming connections on 3G anyway. I know on Vodacom you need to request to be put on the unrestricted APN. If this is the case then you don't really need a firewall on your side as connections are all blocked before they even reach you.

Okay, that's handy to know.

Use the built in Win7 firewall and MSE for antivirus and you should be good.

The cellphone providers blocks all incoming traffic automatically unless you machine opens the connection first. If you want port forwarding you actually have to phone them to enable it, everything is blocked by default.

You are more at risk from installing some sort of trojan that goes undedected onto your system that establishes an outgoing connection to it's masters than someone coming in from outside.

That makes more sense.

Firewall is critical.

If however, your machine doesn't contain critical data and or you have no problem with it being compromised, don't worry ;)

The fact you have Windows 7 running means 0 null with regards to protection. And only having an AV installed means null as well.

Question the importance of your data and network usage and if you feel that it has a significant importance, then install a firewall.

Also do note, installing a firewall by itself isn't going to help you. Remember a firewall is a software that MUST be configured and customized to your network for it to both work and function properly. An unconfirmed firewall is as unsecure as Windows 95. The built in firewall in Windows 7 is good, but you need to configure it ;)

If you would like help in setting up the firewall properly just send a reply ;)

To block outgoing connections successfully, you'll need a dedicated firewall such as Smoothwall. Most trojans may be able to bypass win7's firewall. Remember, the bad guys think outside the box, they don't conform to rules.

Comodo firewall is free and regularly gets updates free of charge. If I'm not mistaken, its one of the most downloaded free firewalls worldwide. (Not that that means much in terms of ensuring security) Its free, why not?

And from my experience, hardly hogs any resources.

Do you think using a condom when making use of a street walkers services is wise? FFS people . Firewall is always important. a proper AV normally has malware protection and a firewall. Even if your provider doesnt allow embryonic connections you are still at risk.
