Officially yes. my mother bought me a Krugerrand pendant when I was a kid, I think I wore it once to a cousin's wedding. She kept it in her jewelry box since then.... I think she still has it.
 
A quarter-ounce one that I got when the company I was working for gave them out after a particularly good year.

We had a couple hundred k worth of gold some or other jubilee sets in fancy boxes.
Eventually got a gold buyer who took the whole lot. When the deal took place he took out all the coins from their moer fancy boxes and threw them in a corner. The boxes have no value at all. I kept a few for the kids to play with.

I still have some or other mandela gold coin that is worth its weight in gold, literally.

The collector's coins are a giant waste of money. Just plain kruger bullion is worth it.
