Do you prefer driving an automatic or manual car?

I think that Toyota have nailed the CVTs in their cars, it feels a bit funny to hear the revs pick up a little or stay the same but you accelerate... It boggles the mind.

Not sure about the longevity of the CVTs these days? Back then, they were quite prone to failures. Is that still the case today?

My gf Toyota has the CVT. Felt weird the first few times I drove it.

I think you are more alert and conscious with your surroundings when driving manual.
You actually driving the car, thinking what gear you need where, not sitting back relaxing and just pushing the pedal.

Probably not!

Then again, I recall an episode from The Amazing Race where the one couple ended up somewhere where they had to get a rental, and the place only had manual transmissions. They lost their lead simply because they were unable to actually drive (being American usually means you're much more likely to drive automatic).

So perhaps my kid may end up needing it some day? Or perhaps he becomes a truck driver because AI is doing all the knowledge work.

I hope they bring automatic transmission prices down to manual then (probably not either). Still irks me that I have to pay 10 - 30k more for an automatic.

With electrification, single speed transmission coupled with regenerative breaking is the inevitable future.

No option for both. Have an automatic SUV for daily and a manual convertible for weekends and fun.

I'm very much "old school" & still enjoy a manual.

I drove this Haval Jolion stick shift/manual tranny (Model Year 2023 Luxury) & to my surprise it was a great deal better than I anticipated.

Solid shift action with a good throw. Even the clutch feel was reassuring.

The 1.5T performs well (for this type of vehicle) revving out with the manual.
