Do you regret getting BB10?

I do not regret getting the Z10. I have loaded the leaked 10.2 OS and it is great. To me it will be a sad day when BB disappears. I just do not have the same affinity for Samsung or iPhone.

I think BB7 devices selling twice as much devices as BB10 and most analysts saying that Blackberry's futures lies in software not hardware it's seems that BB10 is near deaths door

I saw that and was blown away... my ailing 9900 is still going for R50 more per month than a brand new Z10.
I might be able to sell this bastard at the end of my contract. LOL

I think the reason being is that you can still get BIS on the old BB7 devices.

For me the BB10 (Z10) is a complete fail on so many levels. I am going back to iOS hopefully with the launch of the new iPhone - but here are my thoughts:
- BB10 has a horrible application eco-system. Development is fragmented and not governed (native apps, HTML wrapped apps, Android ports etc)
- For a commercial purpose no analytics platform exists (Google does not support it, Flurry is garbage). As a app-developer (unless you write your own), you have no insight over usage behaviour
- The only outstanding feature of the phone is battery life (far superior compared to iPhone4/5 and most recent Android phones)

Anything else is horrible:
  • Cant click on a SMS'ed phone number to dial
  • Dialer is garbage and confuses itself when you have multiple addresss books. This gets worse when BBRY tries to "merge" contacts from Facebook, LinkedIn and your phonebook. For example, contacts in that "unified" view will not show up in my phone-dialer and I have to dial them from the separate address book app.
  • The whole copy&paste experience is horrible
  • As "hip" as the BBRY Hub was made out to be, it just spams your phone.
  • 8 months in and the phone still only supports ONE alarm
  • Applications can not be properly backgrounded (like in iOS or Android)
  • Absolutely zero support from most of the big apps (Flipboard, Nike training apps etc)
  • BBRY relying on operators to distribute upgrades is an epic mess - Vodacom at least makes sure that it's up-to-date (anyone else better get yourself a blank Vodacom SIM, no love from MTN/CellC & others)
  • Phone frequently locks and power-cycles (hence I deem the phone unreliable as an alarm)

The local BBRY guys are great, but BBRY as a whole relied too much on a phone to save the business. The biggest mistake was to get rid of BIS and over this year now to fragment their products with a ton of different phones. The launch in January was rushed (they should have come out with Z10 & Q10 and kept BIS).

I do find QNX a superior OS and it's just a pity the way BBRY packaged it. It will be a miracle if BBRY is not bought out or faces a major restructure in the next 3 months.

Just to address some of those...

  • Cant click on a SMS'ed phone number to dial Works in OS 10.2, due out soon.
No issue on mine at all; they all work.
  • The whole copy&paste experience is horrible Vastly improved in OS 10.2.
  • As "hip" as the BBRY Hub was made out to be, it just spams your phone. I have no issues with this...it shows what you get.
  • 8 months in and the phone still only supports ONE alarm In OS 10.2. Way easier to set alarm in BB10 than on iOS in any case.
  • Applications can not be properly backgrounded (like in iOS or Android) In OS 10.2.
  • Absolutely zero support from most of the big apps (Flipboard, Nike training apps etc) That's the case with a few apps, but nowhere near "most". Flipboard can be sideloaded, incidentally, and works fine.
  • BBRY relying on operators to distribute upgrades is an epic mess - Vodacom at least makes sure that it's up-to-date (anyone else better get yourself a blank Vodacom SIM, no love from MTN/CellC & others) Agreed.
  • Phone frequently locks and power-cycles (hence I deem the phone unreliable as an alarm) Don't have this issue at all.

Yeah - I was holding on for 10.2, but that has been in dev preview now for ever. Instead of "hiring" Alicia Keys as a PR stunt, they should have focused on understanding what apps their user base want and then focused on creating partnerships with those companies.

I agree with you - they should have focused on those top 50 or so apps, and got them sorted as soon as possible. There are a number of alternatives to many of the big names available, but of course they don't always carry the same weight in the consumer mind. I did hear that when Google was approached to get Google Maps on BB10, Google wanted $100m for it.

Why don't you just get a full upgrade and go to Android?

iOS seems a bit of half assed upgrade to me :/

Used Android since 2009 on and off and even the most recent version is not a very good value proposition. I do think that Apple's application eco-system and their cloud-services function exceptionally well. Only concern with iPhone is the battery life and hopefully this is addressed with the next version.

You should be concerned with a fair amount more ;)

Look - iOS 7 will make things better, but that's purely because they've made it more Android like my live wallpaper, notifications, control centre and other Android features. Just makes sense to me to get the real Android rather than wait for iOS to introduce then after seeing what Android.

When I use iOS on my iPad I really do feel like I've gone back in time. To each his own though - and if you're a basic user that calls and texts, then it's quite decent.

TBH, I completely dislike iOS 7 and it has not grown on me. The most important aspects I miss on any other phone (yes, I am a brand-slut) - is the lack of Nike+ support on anything but iOS (that is really my primary reason).

Don't get me wrong, I think Samsung devices rock and once the Android eco-system does support proper integrated cloud services it will be a winner. I am not sure why, but I feel more comfortable having my cloud data with Apple (through iCloud) then with Google.

I love my Z10, BB10 to me seems to be in the right direction. Most people complaining about the new devices is due to software related issues, we (the people who bought BB10 devices) are early adopters who will have to bare the pain and live with our choices.

The hardware for me is not that great but the software does all I want, and thanks to the support of Android apps I can have the app I want without using Android. BlackBerry is definitely going to have a tough time finding a spot in the market again, the name itself has been destroyed throughout the years and they haven't really proven that they are confident with their own product.

Now that Blackberry is going to be bought up and most probably be sold for "scrap" which basically means BB10 support is nearly at is end, has your feelings changed?

Hmm, contemplated getting one but now with BB going belly up, what other device should I go for? Not a big fan of all the apps etc, only use the phone for its basic purpose+whatsapp & BB messenger? Also not a fan of the new big flat Samsung Galaxy, friend got one recently and the battery don't even last a day! :wtf:

You sound surprised. This is the case with most modern smartphones.

I have been far much more unhappy with android compared to my Z10. Blackberry as a company has recieved negative publicity and they have made it worse for themselves by making some costly decisions.

All the same, i love my z10 cant wait for Z30

I enjoyed the Z10 from January till May. Around then I realised that BBRY is really doing absolute zero to support the platform. OS upgrade has still not arrived and the most basic (but important) issues are still outstanding. Still can't click on a number in a SMS to dial, phonebook is a mess with multiple address-sources. iCloud IMAP/CalDav is broken since the 10.1 upgrade. Still no multiple alarms. Flipboard will eventually come with 10.2.

Instead of growing the app-eco system, BBRY allowed rogue developers to publish garbage apps and instead of focusing on the OS, BBRY decided to fragment their hardware platform with a number of different models to confuse consumers even more.

Will ditch the Z10 in favour of a iPhone 5s - at least all the apps I need will function on iOS.

Even if BlackBerry disappears, my Z10 will not suddenly stop to work. I am happy and at this stage cannot see myself moving to an Android phone. I have to add that I have upgraded to 10.2, which came with some nice updates such as setting multiple alarms and TOAST notifications.

The sad thing is that Blackberry could have been great, it was maybe just too late.
