I'm also still rocking a D90. Is was my most solid purchase ever!
About 5 months ago I was in need of a little cash. I contacted an online purchaser based in C.T. to find out what they would offer for the D90, 18-140mm lens, 50mm lens, tripod, charger, spare battery and carry bag. They offered R2K. I politely declined...

I have an old D90, that I only really use for wildlife on holidays. Would love to upgrade, but doesn't seem worth it. The D90 still works.
same here. D90 is good enough for most of us. I am sure a professional photographer can capture stunning photos with lenses I have with my D90.

Bridge camera is what you want.
Not as big and cumbersome as a interchangeable lens camera and way better pics than a phone, Especially when you need zoom, as phone's zoom mean nothing.
A bridge camera with a 1 inch sensor and 25x optical zoom gives you everything you need.

I had an entry level dslr unit years ago. It was used like 1-2 times a year.
I'm happy with that 1-2 times a year. When I am in the mood to take serious pictures, I want it done properly. I'd hate to go on a 3 hour hike for a few great shots, only to be stuck with an inferior camera...

Yes. As long as it keeps working perfectly, I see little benefit in moving to mirrorless.

Nope, I've never owned one.

Ditto

i think only pro photographers need these things - and people who need casual photos and selfies just need a phone with a decent camera and some post processing know-how to be able to improve their schitty snaps into semi decent ones

Used to use them regularly until all my gear, other than my 500 F4 lens, was stolen from my home office. Moved to mirrorless when the insurance paid out.

I think most that own these probably bought them before phones had decent cameras.

Not really.
I don't take a lot of pictures, but when I want to take a few the phone just does not work.
In a nature reserve a phone camera is useless. Taking pics of animals in general, even birds in the garden, the phone is useless.
Taking pictures/videos of your kids on the sport field the phone is also running out of talent. Maybe if you stand next to a small netball or tennis court, the phone can work. But no way in the stand at rugby, hockey or athletics.
Sitting at the middle or back of a school hall that is pretty dark, your phone is also next to useless.

Got a Nikon D5300 gathering dust. I used to take a lot of photos alas now my life isn't that interesting and my cheapy cellphone camera will do.
