The beaches around me were empty yesterday apart from a few fishermen.

Well here beaches are open for now, 09:00 - 18:00, so I assume the virus received and acknowledged the ‘do not spread during these hours’ memo.
With us allegedly reaching 10000 infections per day a blanket closure is more likely than not, and then the beaches will likely be the least of our worries.

I think for now it will be quiet, but as we come up on Christmas Day and New Year's I can see the landscape changing.
That being said, I think the beach bans are a silly idea that won't amount to much in the greater scheme of things.

Oddly enough they were all actually fishing. Give it a few days for everyone to get their permits and I'm sure that will change.
Assuming that the closure will be enforced - this is a big if, I know - the lovely beachgoers will merely travel by the bus-load to other near and far open destinations.
Sadly, for this prevention to be effective, travel from said closed locations will have to be banned as well, which it won't.

People still can't get the simple truth - all along there were and still are crowds all over Safrica, every day, with little concern for compliance.
Result: no more deaths than a bad flu season.

I don’t see the point of this at all. So instead of swamping the beaches, people crowd indoors at malls and restaurants. What’s been achieved when the possibility of transmitting a virus in open air and sunshine is much lower?

Agree, and those are the days nobody will give a **** and descend anyway, if not to popular beaches, then to out of the way ones.
We haven't been to the beach in years - is there still space to sit or are people within 1 metre of you
Beaches should start charging so they don't get overcrowded - oooh I would LOVE that. Cheaper during the week and early morning, late evening. Expensive at peak hour. Children pay extra
(kidding).
