A guy at work claims it's safer than internet banking because the data is encrypted.

If its just via the cellphone browser you have the same security as a pc browser. Most internet banking sites employ dual factor authentication in any case if they want to try and cause damage when in. You dont really have anything to worry about.

Payment apps is a different kettle of fish, because now you are providing your card details in order to perform a transaction. Pick wisely there.
