Let's be clear, an all out nuclear war would be the last great war as humanity would be all, but wiped out. No one's got time for that...

But if we talking a protracted war between multiple nations, resulting in millions of casualties over a short period of time? Doubt it. No one has the time and/or appetite for that either...

WW3 would mean two equally strong sides fighting and an unclear outcome for a long-time meaning millions of casualties over a long period. With NATO still being largely intact I see it as unlikely right now. The only powers strong enough to even contemplate taking on NATO are China combining with Russia and they don't get along all that well. China also has way too much to lose if it starts a war now. Chinese wars tend to be internal, or limited external. They win via trade through most of history and that is a deeply imbedded tradition there.

Overall the only way I see it happening is the Muslim world gets crazy enough to get serious about invading Israel pulling in parts of NATO. NATO gets bogged down in the middle east and then China and Russia jump in when they are already overstretched. Likely Russia does it to take back their Eastern European assets and in exchange they bring China in for the big parts of Siberia that once fell under Chinese influence giving them access to resources, and in particular fresh water from the lake up there. China would get guaranteed territory, take Taiwan, and secure themselves as the major power in the East. Doubt they even try take Korea or Japan but they do neutralize US assets in both countries with North Korea doing a lot of the heavy lifting in Korea and China supporting. South Korea may fall or become a puppet state. Japan keeps autonomy in exchange for expelling US military assets and breaking its alliance with the US. At least that would be the Chinese/Russian objective.

Of course it's all conjecture. Doubt it starts in the next 5 years, but I would not be surprised if it does within the next 50. The current world trade order is under big threat. If Trump's tarriffs and hightening tensions continue to break international trade then it gets a lot more likely. An old but very true saying in geopolitical circles is this: "If goods don't cross borders, armies will".

The international trade order is currently propped up by the US policing the oceans and Trump is pulling back on that. With the advent of naval and air drones I don't see how we maintain international shipping anymore. Any bad actor like Somalia, Yemen, random rebel, crime, or Mahajabeen groups etc can build those and just stop shipping anywhere near them. When that happens, all bets are off.
 
Likely to remain safe here if things do escalate, unless someone comes after the past-Africa ocean passage or our minerals.

they don't?!?

since 2014 they've built their relationship to the strongest it has ever been, billions in bilateral trade in their local currencies with China making up most of the gap left by western sanctions preventing oil and gas trade, China supporting Russia at the UN, both key members of BRICS, Putin was an honorary guest at the China hosted Olympics etc etc etc

they get along exceptionally well in fact, they were pushed together by the west which was quite a spectacular own goal

In that scenario we will survive well here in S.Africa. I think then people will value water/food/weapons/medicine as currency and go back to the Barter system. Maybe Gold/Silver will make a come back later as a worldwide currency.

My Spiritual Master used to say that real wealth is in land and food.
 
I think a major miscalculation will set it off, something as innocuous during the Iran /israel war,
somebody sees a missile that's act differently,

Israel will react, Iran will react, the US will react, Russian will react and China will react,all in a few seconds
it will all be over in 20 min and the entirety of western civilization will be obliterated in less than 20 min

so that's how long it will take for human beings to destroy everything, and become cave dwelling marauders and tribes for the next 2 years until the fallout subsides?

I mean I look at the recent Israel war, and think to myself, how close did it get, sure Israel took out many things, but could it go further?

you betchya. Israel never got its Jericho 2 missiles out of Dimona to threaten the world with.
