Currently using a DIY solution for general data storage. Basic desktop pc.

Yes, better than switching tapes  I don't store it in a cabinet though. I have data which is sensitive, so some storage standards must apply. I do encrypt those backups.
Seems we're pretty much in the same situation. I planned how I will restore etc if I had a hardware failure.

I used a little microserver and 2pairs of 2TB NAS disks in RAID1. Then Eskom happened when I was not home, the PSU blew. DR initiated. I moved the disks to an old PC carcass with a CPU, a P35 motherboard and 200W PSU. It works :)

No, don't run a NAS, would be a nice to have, but the units, without any hard drives, cost a pretty penny. Then you have to typically buy double the hard drive capacity that you need, due to RAID requirements. Which pushes the cost of an already expensive device up into the stratosphere.

Tho I might still have had a 5 Terrabytes music collection I ripped from my extensive CD collection, and recorded from my even more extensive LP collection. Lost due to Eskom load shedding, it being highly debatable, whether having a RAID'ed NAS might have saved it.

Highly unlikely you’d have lost all the drives and parity all at once in a NAS setup.

My UnRaid box I forget to turn off most load sheddings and so far not a single problem.

Nope, too poor to run a proper big *ss storage NAS, just using a 1TB HDD with a Raspberry Pi 4, that recently got corrupted a while ago with LS... Sigh.

Yes, used to have an hp microserver i picked up for 1500 if I remember correctly. Always wanted a Synology. Then won it here. It is really awesome and super easy to set up.
Actually still have the HP, but gathering dust at the moment.

That is probably true ... , but yeah ... , what's done is done :(

And Covid related financial issues, have prevented me from aquiring a new drive to start building my digital collection over again.

Using QNAP, bit me in the proverbial when the ransomware attack happened.... Lost a lot of home photos on my home one, work was OK, I had backups.

My wife's photo's, letter my ancient laptop, and my Desktop computer. Been tempted a time or two, to just delete them, but they are the only backups that exist. So despite needing the space on occasion, they persist.

Had a HP Microserver back in the day but with streaming services and the like I haven’t touched it in years.

Google Drive serves as primary backup and MS OneDrive as secondary.

Don't use either Google Drive, nor MS OneDrive - so far managed without a MS ID account.

No, but have my documents synced across 3 devices, photos across 4, and both Google drive.

Any coding projects are all on github in private repos as well, also have an install script for all my apps via choco, so besides having to trigger what steam games to download, can be up and running on a new device pretty quick.

Ya, that one, I was hit before I was notified of a firmware update. Also even though the system is set to auto update, it never does. It will only update when you manually select the update.
I am very impressed with the security options from Synology. Also want to try C2 Backup for the worst case scenario.

It’s pretty much why I went for UnRaid in the first place since you can start with one drive and then mix and match.

Seem to recall I started with 1 x 4TB then later added another but with no redundancy.

At some point had a spare 1TB and added that as a cache drive.

Scored a deal on a 5TB and then added that as a parity drive and now it was finally redundant.

Then later still got my hands on a 6TB drive and replaced the parity drive with that.

Scored another 6TB and now I was out of slots so the cache drive had to go.

This all happened over many years.

I think as it stands right now it’s 2 x 6TB, 2x5TB and 1x4TB.

So I’m limited by the parity drive now and could only take them all up to 6TB, or I need to replace that first and then start upgrading the rest.

Probably the next step would be to just buy two large drives at once and replace the parity as well as 4TB in one shot.
