VPNs are everywhere. Some people won’t browse without one; others don’t see the point.

Do you think VPNs are essential, overhyped, or misunderstood?

Yes, to bypass Vodacom's throttling. And the first three options.

Why don't you tell me?

In my personal capacity no.

At all my jobs since 2007, yes, as its the only way to get access to various programmes that I need to do my job.

Off course yes, Dont want my isp to see my porn searches.

Other: For security and to access overseas content.

EDIT: multiple choices allowed.

With the potential move to lands yonder, I was checking all the services that I pay for in South Africa:
  1. ZA: Disney+ - which is an annually paid thing - and doesn't work outside South Africa at all
  2. ZA: NetFlix Premium - which I started in the UK and then continued to pay the UK rate for 6 years while in South Africa (je suis une grande idiot) but it works showing the local catalog of the country you in.
  3. ZA: YT Premium Family - shared with 6 family members - works regardless of country I am in
  4. ZA : Apple One with Apple TV - works anywhere (Apple TV+ , Music, iCloud, Arcade
  5. ZA: Amazon Prime - shared with 2 family members. Never tried to access it on my phone while out of country - unsure if it even works
  6. ZA: 2TB Google One - shared with 6 members
  7. UK: iCloud in UK as her account is from there. While she is part of my ZA Apple Family , she can't use ATV+ or Apple Music. We loaded 100GBP onto her account - still have 70GBP to go before I can change her account to ZA.
  8. PLEX : 🤣🤣
Of course these services are cheaper in South Africa and I will be keeping them all if I can as I will still pay from ZA credit card that I need to keep.

Thinking once I am overseas, to setup a dedicated VLAN/SSID with a VPN enabled so all traffic appears to come from 'South Africa' and hoping performance would remain good.

Which VPN would allow ZA Disney Plus to work out of country and for how long would I be able to stay out of the country before they catch on. Thinking paying for a dedicated IP would also be a good idea?

Quite a few offer SA servers, go for one of the best rather for proper service. Recommend Windscribe, in the top 2 or 3 for sure.

Which VPN? With ours they have a stealth mode with their desktop app when things get difficult, can notice the difference.

Technically, no I don't.

Technically, yes because I use Cloudflare Tunnels but this is on a per destination basis and anything going through Cloudflare Gateway is still localised.

I went completely anonymous online a while ago.

I have no social media accounts. Personal stuff goes to my domain email, rest to Protonmail using their aliases so I can nuke it after use.

VPN goes Switzerland or Iceland to some random obscure Eastern European country.

Duckduck browser that nukes everything before exit.

All of that to save three dollah while tripling your income moving overseas?

For personal stuff: no - I have no reason to use a VPN except sometimes if I'm trying to troubleshoot routing issues or something like that.

For work: my role doesn't really require work VPN access but have used the work VPN occasionally in the past, and sometimes I have to access things from different geographic locations.
