How much does one pay the harbour authority to dock a boat there per month? I am talking about the Cape Town area. I am curious because I would like to know the impact that owning a yacht will have on ones wallet. :D

Mooring fees is not that expencive, so far I know.
The real killer is the running maintenance costs, insurance fees and replacing your safety equipment yearly.

About R40 000 a month for a decent yacht

R40k a month :wtf:

I walk talking about a 24' to 30' Monohull. I am guessing the R40k is for a prime spot at the V&A Waterfront?

Hmm, will have a look at that. Is the maintenance excessive for the smaller boats like the one above, or are you talking about 50' + Catamarans?

I imagine it’s like Durban. Sliding scale – ‘good address’. A walk-on mooring with fresh water, electricity and telephone/ADSL lines will be expensive. A mooring ‘on a trot’ (a line of boats at anchor) with a dingy required to get to shore, will be much cheaper.

A mooring at another yacht club, the baseline costs within the context of a ‘not so good address’, the baseline sliding scale will be cheaper still.

Good move with the monohull if you are based in SA waters. The Southern Ocean eats catamarans for breakfast.

Moorings in CPT are precious. There's not enough of them. You'll pay through the nose. Cheapest mooring you can buy- and that requires probably a couple of boat rides and a swim or two is R28,000 and you'll be able to dock something the size of a bathtub there. otherwise...http://www.rcyc.co.za/mooring.html

Try Hout Bay yacht Club (hbyc.co.za) or False Bay Yacht Club in Simonstown (fbyc.co.za) all much cheaper than V&A or Royal Cape.

You can also look at Langebaan or Port Owen, or consider a trailer boat.

I'm doing the same research myself...need a new hobby:D

what about Gordon's Bay?

I want the yaght librarian posted. ooh that baby would be awesome. move her out to sea on a summer night, put up some nice lights, cocktails, David Quetta on fill volume out of at least 6 subs around the ship. awesome... *Drool*

You just spoiled the whole image for me.

What's wrong with the silence & the soft lapping of the water against the hull?

Good point about Gordons Bay Rurapente

I'm in Melkbos so that makes Langebaan "local" for me and puts Gordons Bay in the Eastern Cape, but if fdaniels is northern suburbs then Gbay would be a good option.

In Durban at Bluff yacht club you can join the club and it will probably cost R3500 per month.

My brother used to work on this but they hardly ever docked due to it's unless they were refuelling or having maintenance/repair work done. Refuelling back in 2008 cost around $1.3m so I doubt docking fee's were an issue.
