Port Elizabeth - About 80 private doctors protested in Port Elizabeth on Monday demanding police action against armed robbers targeting their surgeries.

The doctors said though the robberies were captured on closed circuit television, the criminals had not been arrested, GroundUp reported.

Among the placards they carried, were some that read: "Police must serve doctors and communities" and "20 cases reported, zero arrests. We demand an answer."

The doctors were joined by a handful of their patients and members of the community, singing the struggle song Senzenina .

Travelling in a long convoy of cars, the doctors went from Njoli Square in Zwide to KwaZakhele and then to Motherwell police station.

They were led by Ibhayi General Practitioners, an organisation of doctors operating in the townships, northern areas and Algoa Park.

Protest convener Mthembeni Tebelele said there had been a "spike of armed robberies in our surgeries".

"Three practices have totally shut down after these incidents and 10 were victims in the month of September alone."

Patients suffer

He said doctors demanded a plan to curb crime, better police visibility and good communication with communities so that criminals could be identified and police could be alerted when stolen goods were being sold.

"We need weekly updates on development of our cases as well as sharing of photos of criminals with the public for all to know and identify criminals."

Port Elizabeth-based doctor Bongani Mooi said the closure of surgeries due to robberies would cause patients, especially the elderly, to suffer.

"We cannot have safe practices in unsafe areas," said Algoa Park doctor Jeff Govender. "Let this be the start of a bigger movement for our communities."

Motherwell police station commander Ernie Neveling accepted a memorandum from the doctors and said the robberies were being fully investigated.

"There will be feedback on cases that have been reported. We also urge our doctors to join hands with the community police forums in their areas to take more preventative measures in safeguarding their premises."

I'm imagining a scenario.

Theives break into surgery, police respond and shoot criminals but not enough to kill them, Doctors watch and laugh.

Only a matter of time before they storm into operating theatres and...

Interesting, A while ago ( And just humor me and put on some tinfoil) we talked to people about renewing drivers licenses and all the eye test machines have been stolen from the department at all the premises in Pretoria.
And then Someone mentioned that they know of two optometrists that have been robbed of the same equipment as well.

Two theories were brought forward

The optometrists in poorer areas cannot afford the equipment
or There are people operating as " Optometrists" in these areas that needed equipment.

Strange that they are going to a certain machine.

IS this the same type of scenario or is it just robbers being opportunists?

Why would you need tinfoil for this ?
Perhaps
"Robbers" have another agenda ?
