Yes, you are right.

I have been told by HA that my file could not be located. They wanted me to re-register my birth, even though I am on the Population Register, they recently issued me a passport and registered my marriage. I just refused to do so and accepted the fact that the vault copy of my birth certificate is gone.

Yes, you are right, the UK is one of the countries who, in some instances, refuse to accept Home Affairs certificates, due to fraud, and require a vault copy.
 
hmm...might need to apply for a birth cert...in case I need it in a couple of years

The problem with that is that embassies (or other authorities) will only accept a certified copy of a document if the certification is within a certain timeframe, like no older than 3 months, etc. I've never understood why though, because what difference does it make how old the certification is.

Precisely. It is not like a marriage where the spouse or marriage date could change at any time. You are born once. Not again.

While you stand infront of them, they need to read a piece of paper to confirm you are alive. :p

After 2 years waiting, I paid doc assist , got it in 2 weeks.quote was 'Discounted price: R793.00 expires on: 12/06/2020'
Courier fees R250 , did also apostil with themBunny hop told me they don't do follow ups.

It's absolutely great that the embassy already has my birth certificate from when I was born, I have a citizenship certificate and everything, also have the old passport, but still need to provide a birth certificate to renew a passport. All the fields for a new passport were also pretty much auto populated since haven't moved since the last time. Still need the birth certificate and get to pay a ~R10k to get the entire process done (inc. passport renewal) for each of them. Absolute BS, last time I got it they didn't even ask for a birth certificate, only got enforced like 3 months after that.
 
Thought I’d add some feedback, albeit early, that I ended up going with a completely different company based on a friend’s recommendation.

I’ll provide contact information once I have the documents in my hand for the benefit of others in future. The friend who recommended them has received all but one of her daughter’s birth certificates which was lost.
