Just want to know. Let's say you're doing your second or third year undergrad in a software-related subject, can you apply for internships? From their website they want 5 years experience minimum :erm:

Thanks

Doubt, their requirements were pretty "advanced" user targeted when I last checked, but nice looking if you have the xp

I know some ppl there and they do, but internships started some time back.

Still, what are you studying, where and what year (if pre-grad)?

Phone their HR department and ask.

Much better solution than asking people on the Internet who won't know for sure anyway.

I got contacted via linked in for the amazon web services in cape town. Would have been nice but im not willing to relocate.

They contacted me aswell to be their Senior Linux Engineer but decided against it due to the location and traffic to work :) oo and salary. hehe

I do think it is a great place to work.

I thought Amazon would pay high?

For a company that does pretty much does online shopping? Unless you are a dev, I seriously doubt they would pay well.

Errr... That was their business model maybe 10 years ago. They have other divisions now. One of the big ones being AWS.

Uhm...as far as I know the branch in South Africa has nothing to do with their online shopping and everything to do with their Web Services...aka Amazon Cloud.

It's always been bit odd to me that we don't ever have Amazon Cloud replication in SA or official shop support, but their entire support team works from here.

Also know some folks there and they claim to be getting paid pretty well comparatively, but then they also work very strange and taxing hours so for all that I know the hourly rate overly isn't all that glamorous.

I went on a tour of their call center in CPT, they do support for Amazon UK. Not sure if they hire interns though but you can send your cv into them. They do Kindle support, refunds, exchanges etc.

Amazon, Kalahari and Loot all are run much the same way and they are very selective about who they employ. Loot prefer university graduates

At the bottom end are suppliers like 4Home, who employ just about anybody, and you can tell that from the typos, spelling mistakes and bad grammar on their website

+1. From what I've read Amazon is a top paying employer paying US interns as much as $5K+ a month. But the again, it's the US. In S.A I wonder how much the salary is.

$5000 is a lot for an intern by any measure anywhere even the US. I don't think even professional make that much starting out

Yes, if you study CompSci at UCT (or similar) Amazon will want to talk to you.

Good chance the Amazon AWS recruiters will visit UCT. Otherwise just talk to some students that are a year or two ahead of you that interned at Amazon recently.
