Does anybody use acetylcysteine?

What is it? :o

I wouldn't hold my breath for an explanation.

OP, what gives with all your odd medicine threads?

I mean, I would totally understand if you engaged in them and partook in discussion about the chemicals you bring up, but more often than not you just start a thread and then... just kind of leave it.

Why?

Acetylcysteine (rINN; pronounced /əˌsɛtəlˈsɪstiːn/), also known as N-acetylcysteine or N-acetyl-L-cysteine (abbreviated NAC), is a pharmaceutical drug and nutritional supplement used primarily as a mucolytic agent and in the management of paracetamol (acetaminophen) overdose. Other uses include sulfate repletion in conditions, such as autism, where cysteine and related sulfur amino acids may be depleted.[1]

Acetylcysteine is a derivative of cysteine; an acetyl group is attached to the nitrogen atom. This compound is sold as a dietary supplement commonly claiming antioxidant and liver protecting effects. It is used as a cough medicine because it breaks disulfide bonds in mucus and liquefies it, making it easier to cough up. It is also this action of breaking disulfide bonds that makes it useful in thinning the abnormally thick mucus in Cystic Fibrosis patients.

I'm sorry if I come across as rude.

Acetylcysteine is related to the amino acid cysteine. It is sold as a schedule 2 medicine but is also found in nutritional supplements as an antioxidant. Its two main medical uses are to protect the liver in cases of paracetamol overdose and to break down mucous in the lungs.

There is evidence that it may offer benefit in the treatment of akathisia. Akathisia is a difficult to describe condition whereby the sufferer has subjective feelings of inner restlessness which are relieved by moving around and tensing and relaxing various muscles in the body. I suffer from mild akathisia which is most pronounced in the evenings, when I keep having to tense and relax my legs and arms and cannot sit still or lie still. I am conidering using acetylcysteine to see if it brings any relief but I am concerned that it may not be safe to use long term. I was hoping that others may offer some insight into this.

Ooooooh. Just say this stuff in the OP! then we will understand.

As a drug with multiple uses, it's a bit hard to answer such a question without knowing what the intended use is.
