Does anyone have some inside Telkom ADSL upgrade information?

Surely someone from Telkom must be reading these forums?
Perhaps someone could give us some inside information on the planned upgrades (due in the next 5-7 weeks).

I've seen posts like the one below, but not sure how accurate it is?

"OK, so here is a little tidbit for you guys!

The ADSL upgrade trials have gone well and we should see the new up to 10 mbps adverts out in about ten weeks.

Good news also for you lower speed guys... all the packages are getting an overhaul so you can also expect to see a free upgrade.

Don't ask me where this info comes from... just be glad. "
 
Well they did upgrade 192kbps customers to 384kbps for free last time they've had line upgrades.

So I guess we'll get some free upgrades in June as well.

Moggie I guessed as much, but surely anonymous bits of info won't hurt Telkom ;)
And they’ll never know which of their 10 000+ employees let the cat out the bag...

Well, actually there probably will it couldnt be that hard to narrow it down....
and why should he risk his employment for u?

um, that little tidbit WAS from a Telkom insider... and I'm sure he would keep us posted if there were any updates. The latest news says that the upgrades are coming June 1st. So let's wait and see.
 
I'm hoping they upgrade my line and give extra cap for free.
 
According to one source Telkom is considering a June 1 launch of the new packages, something which may coincide with the official launch of their 10 Mbps ADSL service.

It's not inside info, but it is info. It gives a good clear idea of when they will be doing the upgrades.
 
As it stands, if you read the recent mybb news articles, you'll know now that the upgrades are scheduled for 1 June 2010. That date does however co-incide with the Fifa World Cup network operator "freeze time" so if Telkom delays it I won't be surprised. Right now its pretty set in stone that 4Mbps will be upgraded to 10Mbps. It would make sense that the other packages get upgraded too, perhaps 384k becomes 512k and 512k becomes 1Mbit? Hopefuly more than that, but I dont see them making the entry-level product much higher. Perhaps 384k will stay, and existing 384k customers will be bumped up. Asside for the line speed changes, we can also expect increases in caps (I'm guessing 1GB = 10GB, 2GB = 20GB, 5GB = 30GB ?)... and it will be interesting to see what happens to the local allocation along with that - I've also read that Telkom has no immediate plan to migrate these standard accounts to uncapped. No more information than this has really been made public (that I know of), so we'll just have to wait and see.

I remember when I had my Telkom line installed. The technician said they'll be upgrading to 8mbps soon. And I was like....no, you'll be going straight to 10mbps when it's launched. And he was determined that it was 8mbps. When they activated my ADSL, I asked for 4mbps (fastest) option, and when I verified my ADSL self-install line, it was already set to 10mbps trial.
 
I'm on 384k with saol uncapped, if they bump my line to faster speed, will It have any effect on me?
Will the isp not still limit the speed?

The uncapped limit is at 384K so when telkom bumps up the line speed (hopefully) on 1st of June. You will still see 384K speed even if your line is 512K or 1024K.
I'm sure all the ISPs that are currently offering uncapped will bring out new packages, but also keep those 384K ones..
 
So in essence it will not help unless you are on a per gb account.

Oh well an upgrade is better than nothing I guess, hopefully SAOL pull finger and offer something to match your line speed.

SAOL does not work on the same principle as other ISP's where they limit your package speed to your independantly of your line speed. SAOL only offers uncapped on 384kb/s circuits and that is why you have to move the line to them so they can exercise contol over it.
