So, I have not had a TV for a good few years.
This past few nights, I was in a Golf Estate that had a TV in the lounge, with SABC TV channels.
It dawned on me that I had no interest in the rubbish being shown.
I looked up the SABC TV guide, and TBH, theres is NOTHING even close to being something I would watch or care to watch.
Question: Does anyone still watch SABC TV, and if so, what in particular, or this SABC a victim of the changing times?
I watch everyonce in a while, just to look whats there. There is some good stuff.... just not a lot.
Firstly there is old series... I can't watch that, either its something I have seen or its a random episode from a random season. I can't watch shows like that.
SABC 3 will have a one or two shows on that are actually watchable but they don't advertise and they but them on at very bad time slots. Mostly these involve travel or cooking or both, these are international quality.
Shows like Cooked in SA or Going nowhere slowly, they will put these on a sunday afternoon and hardly advertise. You have to hunt these out.
Then you get the local dramas and soaps, not really my thing but people do watch that. Some of those used to be much better than they are now. Also very hard to pick up if you are randomly channel hopping.
If you turn on at the right moment you might catch an old movie that you don't mind seeing again... this is possibly the only reason I ever get stuck on a channel.
The rest is basically infomercials, it may not look like it at first but watch long enough and you will see its just a paid advert. This is what has happened to shows like Top Billing and Pasela, they are ok to watch but rarely get interesting because its just an advert....
Possibly the only other thing that really hooks me in is the random documentaries they have... and also never advertised but end up interesting. You just have to be prepared to hunt them out on SABC1/2
Grouped in with that is shows that cover the opinions and experiences of the average South African. Now this is probably not entertainment but I do find it interesting to see how the other half live... lets face it, if you are on this forum and in front of a computer screen you hardly fit in to the average South African demographic. I consider learning this stuff valuable and two my own benefit.
If you had nothing else to watch for long enough you would definitely find stuff to watch on SABC. They have the content they just need to organize it and have it in an on demand service....I'd still choose Netflix over what they have though.
