Does distance affect ADSL

By the way what is a "EWSD switch" and is it bad to have one?

It's an Electronic Worldwide Switch Digital, which is one of the most widely installed telephone exchange systems in the world.
Without it you'd still have a switchboard operator who transfers your calls via patch cables.

Telkom have replaced all the old open copper wires (about 3 or 4 mm thick) on my telephone line with new black insulated wire (I think about 0.5 to 0.75 mm thick and probably made of aluminium) and I suspect my neighbour who lives 7 kilos from town on a different route to me, still has the old open wires which I suspect have less resistance because they are so thick.
This could very well be your problem. Why did they replace the old copper? Theft?

No alternative that I know of, although I'm willing to be corrected. I had a 3G wireless Dongle when I first moved to Stutt 6 years ago only to find that Stutt had 2G and my Dongle didn't work. I then got ADSL in about 2009 and haven't really had problems until Telkom jacked the speed up in December.

You could always try 3G again. Surely there has been improvement in the past 6 years.

Ok, this might sound drastic and possibly like a potential waste of money but....

There's a post on this forum detailing this (I unfortunately can't remember the post or the forumite who posted it) but basically you should order another line from Telkom i.e. a completely NEW telephone line and request it to be dsl enabled. Then once it's installed and if you're happy with the new line you cancel the old one. I did this two years ago and it "worked" for me. I ended up being connected to a different exchange altogether and my stats improved.

Possibly it was theft as there are only 3 houses on this road and although there are still sections of the line which have the old wire with the new wire strung below it, its possible that the thieves never took all of it.

Stutt has only the one exchange and Telkom has already replaced 200 metres of my line with new line when the problems started in Dec. so I am unlikely to get anywhere requesting a completely new line! I will ask Telkom to downgrade my signal speed from 2mg to 1mg and then at least I'll have ADSL all day instead of only some days even though it might be slower.

Oh. If the problems started *before* they replaced your line then maybe it wasn't the line in the first place?

I then can only suggest you re-look your 3G options. . .

Have just phoned Telkom and asked them to downgrade my speed from 2mg to 1mg. Look at the difference! Thanks for your help.Task manager- Networking after downgrading to 1mg.jpg
