Does fibre require an MSAN

Hi

Just wanted to ask, the road below us has just had a base poured and an MSAN cabinet installed, could this be for fibre or VDSL, could they run fibre from these MSAN boxes to the homes ect? If it is for VDSL then why not go straight to fibre??

MSAN is required generally for fibre, but also for VDSL. They would need to make the MSAN fibre ready etc, but I would imagine if it's a new deployment they would go straight to fibre and drop the VDSL.

MSAN stands for Multi Service Access Node. The 'Multi Service' is referring to multiple access technologies: ADSL, VDSL, Fibre, etc.

Although I am no expert, what I have generally seen is that when an MSAN is set up, it's usually used for VDSL, but I could be wrong. Best option is to check back to Openserves coverage map regularly for updates.

Generally how it works is that Telkom runs fibre back from the msan, and uses copper from the msan to the home.

Not required in GPON networks. In fact it's likely significantly cheaper for Telkom to NOT use their MSAN nodes to provision fibre. Fibre can travel several kilometres (80km+) without having to be repeated, with affordable tech.

Telkom is likely terminating the fibre backhaul directly in their exchanges but would still go through the MSAN where a fibre distribution (passive) panel would be installed to aggregate the backhaul to the exchange - where the actual OLT (the expensive GPON equipment) would be.

Openserve are currently not using the MSAN's for FTTH.
