Does fibre work during load shedding?

Considering getting fibre from Afrihost / Vuma.

I have a UPS for my equipment.

But what about the fibre line itself? Does it stay on during loading shedding - i.e. does Vuma have backup power?

Grouter: Thanks. Do you know whether all Vuma lines have backup power, or only some suburbs?

Someone at Afrihost told me it depends on the suburb, but a rep from another ISP told me Vuma doesn't have backup power (at all). Can't get a straight answer these days. :)

It's definitely not a cut and dry answer. For the most part however, fibre networks tend to have far more resiliency than copper or mobile networks. This will really be tested with stage 6+ loadshedding now.

So far my Octotel connection in Blouberg hasn't had any problems during the power outages.

@AfriNatic @Afrigirl Any thoughts? I tried to contact Vuma directly to get the info from the horse's mouth, but there's not way to communicate with them.

For Vumatel their Pop's do not go down due to power outages. They have extensive backups at all switches and OLT's. Unless it's a failure of these backups it won't go down but if it does Vuma logs a network incident for techs to attend.

I'm on Octotel fibre and posting this message during load shedding. :)

I have a couple of friends on different fibre providers and none of them experience issues during load shedding.

this is not true, we on Vuma and everytime theres LS, after bout 30 mins our line is down, and this is every single time. So it may greatly depend on your suburb and if Vuma has sufficient backup power... and btw, not a single time have i seen a network incident logged for my area when they are down due to LS, only for adhoc incidents

I'm with Vuma and it says on. Edgemead CT.

The only correct answer is - depends, but mostly

If and OLT or Switch goes down for any reason an NWI gets logged by Vumatel for a tech to attend. Your issue might be something else.

might help if you say which area you from. soemone from that area might just have an answer.
For me in Brackenfell Morgenster are our fibre has never dropped. 3 years now with Vumatel and Webafrica, and not a single day of issues yet.

Hi thedevv

As everyone stated depends.
I got TTConnect with Afrihost about 2 months ago. Initially it was ok, but as we moved up in stages, as of a week ago, it lasts 1 and half hours when the power goes out and comes back about 5 minutes after the power returns.

Loadshedding here is 2 and half to 4 and half hours depending on schedule. Rynfield, Benoni.

I have to use Vodacom prepaid LTE running at 1.5Mbps for when the fibre is down. Not great for working from home! I'm awaiting feedback from Afrihost regarding the issue.

Not sure what I will do if they can't get it sorted.

@Slamz
Same here, not a single official report when this happens. I started logging faults every time it happens, but they stopped responding to me.

TT Connect just isn't that good in general. Luckily we had a choice between then and Vumatel.

Hi

The quick answer is yes, each FNO node will have backup power.

Powering active ethernet equipment, with one SFP per customer line, will need more backup power. Powering GPON equipment where one SFP is used for many customer lines is generally less power hungry.

Some Vumatel areas are GPON, some are AE.
