The high cost of bandwidth in South Africa means that many local websites are hosted internationally. Even Government seems to think international may be better.
The eNatis websites, which recently attracted attention after being hacked, is hosted in the United States. According to its domain information the website is hosted with Bluehost in Utah, America.
For those not familiar with eNaTIS (Electronic National Traffic Information System), it is a system of the Department of Transport, provided for and partially funded by the nine provinces, which individually owns the data of their respective users.
What is even more ironic is that the Nepad website is also hosted in the United States. Nepad (New Partnership for Africa’s Development) has a strong focus in African development – specifically in the ICT arena.
It does however seem that a lot more work is needed if Nepad does not trust the African ICT arena enough to host their website within the continent.
