Related question, is PPPoE supposed to work over a hub/switch? I've tried this before and it does not seem to work. Or does ethernet connection have to be directly connected to PC (from my understanding of ethernet architecture it should work just fine across the switch).
Setup I have at home is as follows:
Main PC-----4 port mini switch-----second PC
......................
(usb).................
......................
iBurst UTD .........xbox360
Currently sharing internet from main to second and xbox, works fine. If I connect the UTD to the switch via ethernet, will it be accessable from main (or any other entity)?
Note: Ignore the dots in the diagram - the posting thing drops the spaces
Theoretically all devices (inc. XBOX) will have PPPoE access to UTD based on your pic, however since iBurst will only accept one concurrent login, one of the PC's (running the Broadband Connection) will have to do the sharing (same as with USB).
On the matter of iBurst and Vista - the answer is new drivers are being developed but it does NOT currently work EXCEPT as described above if you use the PPPoE option (via ethernet). Obviously this cannot be done with a UTC or UTU.
On the 2nd question, you CAN connect the UTD to a switch BUT what you find is that in the scenario above, computer 1 tries to connect and does so successfully. Then computer 2 tries to connect but computer 1 has already established a connection. So computer 2 cannot connect UNTIL computer 1 disconnects. Answer is to get a router. MUCH easier and really not that expensive.
Oh, and something about Vista and using the UTx directly without a router; you can no longer set the MTU and Dr.TCP type settings with the old programs.
They have changed the way things work so Vista automatically adjusts the RWIN dynamically.
However I just found this Vista tweaking program called Vista Manager which is like Tweak XP for Vista, it can make a lot of useful changes, including the MTU and related settings.
