Does IS shape?

But theoretically there should be 2-3 times more delay on IS opposed to SAIX due to the higher latency... SAIX also has less loss due to the fibre vs satellite afaik?
 
yes but the delay is marginal - I have been working with satellites for years now, and the latency I have come across with "proper" DVB /SCPC technology is around 500ms round trip international - latency on your cell phone is around 250 -350 ms.

If you not really a online game player, then surely the latency wont matter when the connection is made via sat, internationally... not so?
 
Agreed with Sunsoffun, however IS is peering at the J'burg internet exchange, keeping local traffic local and int'l traffic via Sat. SAIXs' latency on the SAT3 to europe is no less than 400 ms...If IS can do it for an extra 150ms, without the bureaucracy of SAIX and Telkom - we're laughing...:)

The higher latency does make sites take a while longer to start loading up, this can be quite bad, especially if you are redirected a few times. It does make the internet look slower but it's not that bad, so the price and shaping diffrence makes it worthwhile to go IS. I dont get how SAIX with such a high bandwidth pipe have to be the ones shaping? Shurely IS have less bandwidth, therefore owuld make more sense for them to be the ones shaping (not that anyone shoukd shape)
 
I agree with you - SAIX should NOT shape! - Satellite bandwidth is much more costlier than fibre - with the amount of bandwidth capacity SA has, i dont see why we have limitations - or are they worried about congestions on the last mile?

everyone goes through the last mile whether SAIX or IS. once it reaches the exchange and moves on to the ISP, thats where things separate. they shape because they can, and there's nothing we can do about it. simply out of spite, use as little resources as possible while charging maximum prices that the law allows.

Umm - i don't think that is the case. Yes the sat may loose packets sometimes (although i haven't heard complaints of this on the IS sat link) the bigger factor is that the shaping system seems to just dump packets to achieve its shaping so despite SAIX having a supposedly less lossy link - you lose more packets through them.

I loose packets to them each month... packets of my money.

So what you are saying, have two accounts:

SAIX = HTTP, Mail
IS = Skype, MSN Massager, Streaming Video, Streaming Audio, Online Radio,file sharing, stock reports and generally everything else what the internet has involved into.

Thats what i'm doing at the moment... although i have more success with even http and mail over IS.
I've changed to over once to the SAIX cause the IS seemed to be slow (didn't solve the problem though...) and the only other reason i connect with SAIX is to use up my cap
 
I'm going to give it a try this month coming up. I've been looking at MrBEEP offerings at OpenWeb... and they look well worth it, considering the state that broadband is in South Africa.

Any other IS providers out there?
 
im with hyperlink, they offering SAIX and IS accounts. service is good so far plus their bandwidth montor works on both types of accounts
