Does IS shape?

Yes, IS shape. They started doing so last week :mad:

HTTP seems to get top priority. I use scp a lot (on non-standard ssh port) and cannot get more than 15KiB/s during business hours. 2 weeks ago, 50KiB/s was the norm 24/7. Traffic is local, uncapped IS account on 512 line.

.... guess they had to start doing so with all the people jumping ship from the hardcapping-SAIX ISPs ....
 
who says they're complaining ? ;)

more accounts = more revenue AND
more accounts = larger bandwidth requirement

solution to larger bandwidth requirement : shaping.

Result of solution : more money for the same resources.

.... just sucks being on the receiving end of it all
 
What evidence do we have the IS is shaping?
Their uncapped products are level 7 shaped - for obvious reasons.
But i have noticed no difference on my IS capped account.

Besides they are not like Telkom - they don't degrade their service, they buy more capacity... more international links. 2 satallite connections to be exact - busy being installed and to be activated in feb.

Heyas guys,

I am sitting on the IS sat's at present(OpenWeb), and i can tell you, they(IS) do shape, but its really lighyears diffrent from the shaping on SAIX. Sometimes, i do get slower transfer speeds, but i have never felt anything to my gaming... Surfing aswell... no problems whatsoever; except perhaps a delay with the initialisation of the transfer, but nothing that will get me complaining... id rather complain about bigger things than a small delay in a page starting to load... think of it as time to light up, of fill up your glass ;) .. or rather, get the lighter or open the bottle? :P

As long as IS dont pull a telkom on us, im happy... if they keep on adding sat's and products, im sure they can become the dominant Provider in ZA... perhaps if we take their business away, they will learn that the customer is king, and not the shareholder.... :mad:

SAIX lost me as a customer even before they had me... the only packets i 'lose' to them, is my monthly double rental, and if i could have it any other way, they would lose me in that aspect aswell.

I heard that it will only be up to 1 gig capacity in January 2006

Some guesstimate that SAIX's ADSL bandwith is below this, what with the (again) speculated contention ratios of more then 100:1 and the aggressive shaping that makes most protocols useless.

As for what their bandwith is at the moment, I dont have a clue
 
Why does'nt IS challange SAIX in open court. If it is cheaper using SATS for international communictaion and it is CHEAPER than SAIX, something is very fishy with Telkom's story about international bandwidth costs. If that can be disputed in court, Telkom will have no choice but to drop wholesale prices. Looks like i will have to try out an IS SAT account and test the response times. If it is better and cheaper than SAIX then F@@@ em.

PS I am using a shaping program on my local network known as CFosSpeed. What an APP !!!!! It reduces pings by shaping incoming and outgoing packets. I have had a significant increase in website loadtimes and download stability since I started using it. Nice thing is that if you place it on a gateway PC, it effects ALL PCs connecting through that gate. Very nice indeed.

Yep, they rent capacity mainly on SAT3, however only used for higher-end leased line products .... their ADSL is satellite only.
 
With the SNO coming in, I hear that they will have quite a bit of international bandwidth on the new pipe being laid and the SAFE / SAT3 cables. Hopefull this will give Telkom a good run for their money.

Doesnt matter if SAT3 was the SNO's first born child, they wont be allowed access to it, telkom has sole landing rights to the cable :mad:

Think when ppl talk about the sno bringing bandwidth, they talking about local bandwidth. thats all good and well bringing down leased line costs but wat we really need is cheaper intl bandwidth. telkom is holding onto that sat3 like its life depended on it
