Does make and model of router/modem effect your speed

Hi

I have an old Netgear DG834Gv5 modem. Seems to be working fine and the wifi range at home is OK.

Will upgrading to a newer modem improve anything?

depends on your needs, if you are just browsing it probably wont make a difference if you are streaming HD content to many devices it most certainly will.

Don't bother OP. Wait till lightning fries it and then replace.

Even the cheapest router will easily outpace a 10mb line.

The only area where it might help is a borderline unstable connection...some of the more expensive ones cope better with that.

Yes, doesn't affect the underlying speed though...just distributes it better.

I have cancelled dstv and stream quite a bit of content. However I do experience quite a bit of buffering which is irritating.

My line synchs at 10mb but the snr is 5.8. Downloads are close to 1MB/s but streaming is not good.

Since my modem is old, I thought that maybe this might help

That line sounds too dodgy...a good router will helps, but 5.8 is really low...

You'll have to drop the line speed a bit i think

Your modem will change your line but not by a lot.

Check your POTS filters.

If I resynch my line to 8mb, then my SNR is much better, quite above 6 but I really would like to run at 10.

Is it worth logging a fault with Telkom?
