How much does mileage matter or is it a case of preference, am having a toughie or maybe i'm just being dumb

2006 BMW 320i, 55000km – 230k
2009 Chevrolet Cruze 1.6LS – 190k (new)
2008 Toyota Corolla 1.6 Professional 36000km – 185k

None.

I don't buy a car on Milage as the working parts can be replaced for a fraction of the price they add to cars with low milage. That being said, I would not use the same frame of mind when buying a BMW or Merc, as they are pretty heavy on replacement costs. But Japanes cars you just buy a second hand engine and you sit with a low km car again :p

Getting a used car vs new? If the new one is cheaper and you desire it there's not really much to think about is there?

I tend to think milleage matters...esp when its over 100 000km's...because most car manufacturers cater for cars up and untill 100 000km's, after that, whatever happens is your baby.

And, some cars tend to show their age after a certain amount of km's...for me, generally lower than 80 000km's is still a good buy, but then again, 120 000kms is still a good buy...or not?

If I were to buy either a used (eg) Audi A4 vs a new Corolla I would go for the Audi...which I did and I do not regret it, sure the Audi has done 100000km, but damn it is a nice quiet stylish climate controlled sweet ride!

For the vehicles you're looking at it's pretty much irrelevant. The higher it is the more relevant it becomes. High mileage cars are more likely to have numerous things going wrong, and not just with the engine.

Just test driven the bm its an exclusive pack doen't have the roar of the 320d but its a great machine, got maintenance up to 105k so thats another 50k to go....so replacement costs of spares not a worry???

Just throwing this suggestion out there - CAR mag just tested the new Kia Cerato 1.6 and gave it 17/20 IIRC. It's only R179k new. Looks sweet.

In the long run, you won't go wrong on the Corolla but 185k is too much for that car. You get them around 140 - 145k.
