Hi guys,

Does anyone know if ADSL is available in Namibia?

Who provides it? Is it available in various cities?

What are the costs? As bad as South Africa? Or worse?

What other affordable options are available?

Henk

Last time I was there, no. I did chat to a guy in the IT industry who told me that UUNET was going to roll out ADSL "soon."

Botswana does have though, up to 1.9mbit - and it's cheaper than here!

1.9Mbit! WHOA!!!! That's so unfair! There was a time that South Africa was the capital of Africa...I beg to differ now!:(

My poor poor country!

mozambique has alot better adsl than we do

and they dont even know what a cap is :/

Hi guys,

Does anyone know if ADSL is available in Namibia?
I was in Windhoek last week and conected via wireless
where I was staying and here is the traceroute

In May, Namibia Telecom was receiving training from Huawei as they are to rollout a Wireless CDMA network.

According the following website http://wireless.internet.na/
it says that this product is from Namibia Telecom using Linksys
wireless router (WRT54GL), maybe they did this as a test then
decided to rollout Wireless CDMA later on.
So Wireless Broadband is available in Namibia.

Botswana Telecommunication Corporation have rolled out ADSL
in Gabarone and Francistown http://allafrica.com/stories/200608140074.html

The 196.44 network belongs to Namibia Telecom
www.ipb.na IP Backbone Info website.

They have direct peering links to SAIX
and to Global Connex international links
Tracing route to 196.25.1.1 over a maximum of 30 hops

1 101 ms 97 ms 108 ms 192.168.1.254
2 10 ms * 13 ms 196.44.140.89
3 277 ms 30 ms 47 ms 10.10.1.1
4 262 ms 100 ms 38 ms 196.44.140.157
5 345 ms 86 ms * 196.44.128.186
6 112 ms 124 ms 839 ms 196.44.128.1
7 887 ms 914 ms 759 ms 196.25.2.113
8 1648 ms 1088 ms 1382 ms 196.43.11.22
9 544 ms 626 ms 552 ms 196.25.1.1

At least they are moving forward...wish I could have said the same here, but maybe with this ADSL 4Gb/s we'll see a improvement in the Telkom backbone...

Telkom DSL1024 customers are in for a pleasant surprise from September 2006 when their connection will be bumped up to a far higher speed.
:D

Henk, as far as I know... they were intending to roll out ADSL in Windhoek when I was there last (2 years ago). I don't know what's happened since then. Best bet is to phone the telecoms provider or google it.

I spoke to a Telecom Namibia employee (friend of mine) at the beginning of the year, and when I asked him if they've got ADSL yet...his reply was: "what's that?"

That may answer your question. :D

When I was there in June, the fastest solution available was 128kb ISDN. (Or MTC's GRPS service).
