Does Silverlight have a future?

HTML5 is the future. Anything not baked into all browsers (i.e. external plugins) puts a fence on the web, and since everyone has tablets, phones and computers - making it work on all of them becomes a problem.

So no... Neither Flash or Silverlight has a future. They should rather invest their effort in expanding the W3C HTML5 spec - which with GPU accelerated javascript, can do everything that plugins can do.

Not to mention the security risks associated with third party plugins as Adobe has demonstrated time and time again.

No, and HTML 5 will not replace it either.

The technology stack of Silverlight (and WPF for that matter) has moved over to WinRT.

Microsoft has given up on the in-browser plugin world, but guess what? HTML5 will not be used to write enterprise class applications (imagine Office in html5, it would be pathetic).

Rather, Microsoft will focus on supporting html5, but will offer their developers a much richer SDK to write "real" applications on. A good move in my opinion.

So no Microsoft-based RIAs in the future?

Till there is a finalized standard and it's widely available MS will keep focusing on Silverlight and it's derivatives. The API is clean and powerful and works relatively well outside of IE.

I do however predict a shift in this paradigm within 4 years when HTML5 is solid and tablets/phones become commonly used for office productivity where silverlight may have trouble moving into those devices

My problem with everybody saying that SL will die is that they obviously have never tried to make a LOB app in HTML (yeah including 5 - it doesnt make a difference).
Seriously, making a real app in HTML is PAINFUL compared to SL.

But SL does definitely have a future because:
a) It's the core of dev for WP7
b) XAML is one of the main options for W8.
