I was wondering if some desktop motherboards support ECC RAM?
I have read quite a lot on the subject and seems some do while others don't, but none advertise it...
Some guys say all Asus motherboards support ECC RAM even thought it does not say so on the Asus site...

I have 32 modules of 4GB DDR3 1333Mhz ECC Registered RAM, just sitting here, was wondering if I cannot use some of them in a new gaming rig :) Don't want to buy a server board just to use some of the modules...

Who the heck freed up 128GB of RAM? That they just gave away?! 1.5V or 1.6V? Might take some off your hands :p

Sell them, they are worth about ~R300 ea. new. So selling them for +- R200 ea. should go quickly as they can be used in an HP Proliant Microserver.

Also what froot said in regards to what to do with your current modules.

To directly answer your question: No, you cannot use those modules except with a server CPU (CPU supporting ECC memory).

The memory controller of 99% of modern PCs sit on the CPU, so the CPU determines the memory it can use, not the motherboard. However a server CPU will not fit on a desktop motherboard.

If you thinking about selling I might take 2 depending on the brand and what you want to charge for them. Want 2 for my HP Proliant Microserver but not enough to pay R630 that 2 new modules would cost me.

Even if you do get one, few non-server motherboards ever comes with more than 8 ram slots anyway. And that is high end boards.
The few non-server boards (that supported ECC )i did spot, was long ago. Seems EOL.
And even they came with them normal amount of RAM slots.
The price your going to pay to build a system around the EEC RAM is going to negate the savings on normal RAM.
You probably going to need a EATX case for it to, take an example, the intel S5520SC Shady Cove that have 12xtripple channel DDR3 ECC slots for up to 96GB RAM. And that board cost around R4500.

If it were normal ECC ram, you could use it on nearly any recent PC.

Being registered, you need a both a CPU and motherboard that supports it and then you would need to go dual socket as well as the single socket intel stuff does not even support it.

like the other said, Sell it.

R4500 is a low end server board ;)

Look at IBM, Dell, SuperMicro, to name a few, for high-end boards.

Being registered ...
Grrr, didn't notice it is registered. Only expensive servers support those. They'll be very hard to sell...

Don't think I can sell the RAM as it came out of our company servers, they will take the money, but I can take 6 for myself they said. Will ask if they are willing to sell...

The memory is a bit more expensive than R300....

46C0596 49Y1435 8936 4GB (1x4GB, 2Rx4, 1.5V) PC3-10600 CL9 ECC DDR3 1333MHz LP RDIMM

Got quoted R840 excluding VAT 2 months ago on the same modules... these don't come cheap! So not to sure if they will sell them for cheap, can always find out...

Cheapest I found them online now was $50 but then you need to buy a minimum of 5 pieces...

We bought 48 modules beginning 2011 for R999 excl VAT, now replaced them with 48 8GB modules... used 12 so far, now 36 left actually, not 32...

True, didn't see they were registered modules.

IBM modules... You are unlikely to sell them. The companies that buy IBM don't buy second hand from my experience.

I know this is an old post, hoping my luck is in...
I just got hold of a Dell R210, it require Dual Ranked • Unbuffered • ECC • DDR3-1333
Do you still have some and what do you want for them?
