Does anyone with a Telkom SIM Sonke prepaid plan have international roaming enabled on their plan? According to Telkom there are two types of international roaming...

1 - voice and SMS calls made to the South African number will be forwarded to the phone when it is overseas.
2 - ability to make voice calls and/or send SMS messages on the phone when overseas.

I only care about (1) above.

I've had such a nightmare with Telkom on this...

Called 180 to get international roaming enabled and was told it could only be done in a store.

Went to the store and was told it could only be done via 180.

Called 180 again and was told that the shop was talking rubbish and I should go back and insist.

Went back to the shop and was again told no, only 180 have access to those systems. Tried to call 180 from the shop but gave up after a 20 minute hold.

Called 180 again later that day who then explained the different type of requests (1/2 above) and that the shops only had access to enable 1 but not 2 and that 180 could only enable 2 but not 1.

Went back to a different shop and they told me that international roaming wasn't supported at all by Sim Sonke (I'd been clear in every one of my calls to 180 that I was on Sim Sonke). Called 180 one last time and they said that was rubbish so I went back to the Telkom counter with the call to 180 still active and gave it to the assistant. The 180 rep then talked the assistant through setting up (1) above, or so I thought. International roaming is supposed to take up to 7 days to activate but 11 days later I am now in the UK and have no service and when I log in to my account on the My Telkom website it shows my international roaming status as "no roaming".

Total nightmare. I'm now beginning to wonder whether that last shop was right and Sim Sonke doesn't support it. Frankly I don't know who to believe at Telkom any more. It's a shame because I really like my Sim Sonke plan but I'm thinking I might need to switch providers if I can't get this sorted out. Any ideas or info anyone?
