Does this make sense for a 256k connection

I used to use 1400 before I formatted my harddrive. After running the tweaktest from the site below I tried the 1500
http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks

Checking with the ping test seems to show both values are incorrect.
ping -f -l 1430 www.dslreports.com works

ping -f -l 1431 www.dslreports.com
Pinging dslreports.com [209.123.109.175] with 1431 bytes of data:
Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.

hmmm, MTU change and reboot time again

Speed Test
Your download speed is: 23.83 KBps, or 190.62 Kbps
The test took 22.453 seconds to complete

dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-03-26 15:04:10 EST:
198 / 82
Your download speed : 198 kbps or 24.8 KB/sec.

Your upload speed : 82 kbps or 10.2 KB/sec.

JayT, I'm connecting on the 128kbps platform and the IP range I have is 68.18.85.xx (Anybody any idea if this platform has an alternate range?)

From what I heard yonks ago, the 512kbps platform also uses the 196-range. Anybody care to confirm? (Read: Anybody silly enough to pay for a 512?!)

:p

here is mine done at : http://www.sentech.co.za/speedtest/display_speed.php
Your download speed is: 31.3 KBps, or 250.37 Kbps
The test took 32.719 seconds to complete

Your upload speed is: 29.05 KBps, or 232.38 Kbps
The test took 47.938 seconds to complete

but then i was still downloading other stuff
I think that the speeds will change depending on the amount of users on the servers & lines etc.

forgot to mention that I have 1024kbp/s line ....
I must say once I donwloaded upto speeds off 546 kbp/s
I average about 100 to 150 kbp/s

128 is on the Sentech range 6*. The other 2 are on the IS range..196*. That's also the reason why the 128'ers can't access the IS news server

Why would it be silly to get the 512 service?

I hardly use P2P anyway. FTP access is much quicker
Depends on where you're connecting to.
In any case there are things you just can't get by ftp.But as you said , you hardly use P2P , so that option maybe what you like :o

your connection sounds really SLOW

I am on dialup and i get 23 kilobits per second

yours is double so only twice the speed of dialup!
