Hi all,

Latest usage for DSL 384

Username: TelkomDSL
Uploaded: 1.94GB
Downloaded: 2.93GB
Combined Total: 4.87GB

You have reached 80% of your monthly 3.00GB cap on both up- and downloaded traffic combined. Please note that you will be redirected to a throttled international service once you reached the cap limit. You have 71.08MB of bandwidth usage left before the constraint will apply.

AVR

I take it TelkomDSL is not your own username then? Or have I just strayed into something only ADSL peeps will understand?

PS: Does the radius server or whatever that tracks usage also need its own ISP/bandwidth account, you could just use up all its bandwidth for the month if you knew the username & password :D

ic - Telkoms usage stats are a bit wacky - they have this odd 24 hour "disconnect" thing going so they can calculate how much bandwidth you've used.

avr-rulez combined upload and download is being reported as way over 3gig.

The stats page looks like this :-

Plus more stats below that. You can check previous months and all that crap.

All user names for Telkom ISP ADSL start with TelkomDSL

Altho I think avr-rulez may be quoting from email stats which you can receive if you like being depressed every day :D

Ok, that explains it then.

I had looked at the figures & assumed he had an ISP a/c with more than 3GB, then I saw the username & I thought he'd stumbled on an internally used Telkom a/c & guessed the password.

ahh - the Holy Grail of ADSL in South Africa ! :D

Seriously tho, I often wonder why Telkom haven't got the savvy to track traffic by the hour as opposed to every 24 hours ? - well, all it means is on the last day of the month, it's a free for all - party on down and d/l as much as you bloody well can ! :D

Groove salad at 128kbps 44khz = mmmm nice ! x by 6 hours = 276meg, add some downloads and surfing into the mix and in the last day, you can easily grab close to a gig.

Does anybody notice the service degrading on the last day of the month?? - If not it would seem that the capacity is there!

I don't know reech - hard to say - running a 128kbps Groove Salad stream for the last 2 hours without a hitch, surfing fast, internet heaven IOW.

Everything seems alright, but I'm not doing any p2p stuff now - that seems throttled - upstream works fine, but downstream sucks ?
I left a torrent going during the day and it had gone nowhere by the time I got home 9 hours later.

Interesting - would be good to have even some anecdotal evidence that the service is not being degraded by 'heavy use' - rubbishing TELKOM's claims to the contrary.

Everybody i know with 1 mb or more left on their account rapes it the last day and get full speeds while doing so. If you have 5 friends you can even get the last 6 days of the month uncapped...

bb_matt are you useing the standard ports with bittorrent? Try chaning the ports to something above the 10,000 range. Telkom cant block all the ports that exists. Well ok they can, but they dont.

This is the same error i reported , boi you have been capped, you just dont know it yet ,

I have, especially my gaming. And I was no where near my cap I only use like 800MB last month. And it's not just me, I was helping a friend out I dl firefox and the transfer rate was 6kb/sec  and he hadn't capped out either  even p2p games are very laggy

I pulled over a Gig on the 31st with no deterioration.
I queue most of my big downloads for the month end and it always works at 50+KBs, I would say that the capacity is there.

What area are you in? I am in the morningside area.

Well, during the month of December I wasn't capped until I was way past 10GB (on a 3GB account), and other users experienced the same. The big joke was that the Telkom employees responsible for administering the cap were on holiday.

Even last month, I managed to transfer well over 7 GB without being capped.

Very strange, but hey, I'm not complaining. :-)
