Sorry about another Mozambique thread. I asked about the driving earlier and I got a lot of advice from MyBB community.

I just want to ask if anybody has been to this spot: http://www.wheretostay.co.za/casarentia/

How do I know if this exists and is not a scam?

99% of the time, stuff on wheretostay is good ... once I booked there, and the women left town ... but the website refunded me.

Why do you think this could be scam? It's listed on a whole lot of travel sites and doesn't give the slightest indication it could possibly be scam.

@ Patty

something to consider before you go to Bilene

The town is situated on the land side of a massive lagoon that is mostly not open to the sea. Most accomodation is situated on the land side of the lagoon so unless you are taking a boat up (or plan on doing some serious 4X4 trips) you are not going to get to the "beach" much
Now although the lagoon is beautiful it smells horrendous at times and during the hotter months water temperature gets up to warm bath levels. This has much to do with the depth on the land side - you need to walk out 500 meters or so in knee deep water before you can catch a decent swim.

Bilene is also pretty close to Maputo so the town is over-run with everyone who has more than 2 mets to rub together over public holidays. Moz locals are very friendly in my experience and party animals of note, but if you don't like the crowds you don't want to be there over the holidays

Having said all that, I've had some amazing holidays in Bilene - some fantastic 4X4 routes and the lagoon is the best jol I've ever had with my Hobie . All the resorts I've spent time at have provided excellent service ... just make sure you know what you are in for before you go up there

Hi McSack. I told Patty that the accomm was not on the beach ... but how far is the walk to the beach. Apparently this house overlooks the Lagoon? We don't have 4x4's though.

Thanks for the tips. Much appreciated. I have been by someone in the know that walking around at night on any beach in Mozambique, including Bilene is a no go.

the lagoon itself is surrounded by beach . If the accommodation overlooks the lagoon then shouldn't be more than 500m -odd walk down to the lagoon beach.
The lagoon itself is over 20kays long and most accommodation is pretty much close to the town so it's not like you'll ever have a huge mission getting to it
The sea is however on the other side of the lagoon. When I was up there Sept it was possible to organise a ferry across for the day from the campsite - not sure of cost though but shouldn't be much and well worth the trip.

I've never had a problem and never felt unsafe, but that could just be the Captain talking or the fact that I'm a big ugly mthrfsker who looks worse in the dark. ;)
No-one else I know has ever picked up any trouble in Moz and we go there plenty. Use your common sense though... a hot blonde in a bikini, drunk on the beach at 2 in the morning is going to get into trouble anywhere in the world ... in spite of what happens in the movies

McSack, do you know how the roads are to Barra? Are they treckable by non 4x4's ... in the December / rainy season?

Road is generally fine all the way to Xai Xai - after that hasn't been all that well maintained but getting to Inhambane is no problem in a normal sedan as long as you take it easy. There are parts where the tar might be totally screwed and you have to travel on gravel for a few kays, but mostly few and far between.
Getting from Inhambane to some of the resorts can be a "challenge" without 4X4

Cool, thanks. Probably best not to go somewhere like that without at least 1 4x4 in the group :P

I just have to mention that I ate THE BEST CRAB CURRY of my ENTIRE LIFE in a small restaurant in Bilene.

Enjoy!!

To answer an earlier question. I don't know im just slightly paranoid by nature. So many scams out there one has to be careful.

Lol ... this morning an Oak from Mustek phoned, but I misrecognised the number and thought it was a rectron number. I told them I sold the company and they said they had no record of this. Thinking this was Rectron I got suspicious, asked for my old sales person of which this guy had never heard. Adding to that he had a nigerian accent, I told him to take his f'ing fraudulent crap somewhere else in harsher words.

Only after I realised it was mustek, and that guy really did work there ... sho, I felt bad ... I apologised to the guy a few times ... just makes you think, these scammer as$holes put you on defence all the time, even for the innocent oaks.
