Hi,

Sister's car "apparently" needs new brake discs and brake pads.
Renault is charging R4.5k including labour for both.

This sound correct? Labour is estimated at R1500 and parts the remaining R3k.

Thoughts?

I can dig my previous quote out later tonight and see what I was quoted by Goch & Cooper.
Also depends on the car.
Has she tried getting a quote elsewhere?

It's a Clio 4. Spending that much on brakes sounds excessive. Could understand if it was a performance vehicle but WTF.

Have asked her to go ask elsewhere in the interim..

Depends if it is front or back discs.
If it is the front, then parts and labour are high. 1 hour max labour. Replacement front discs and pads is under R1k @ dealers
If it is the back, then parts are spot on (disc and bearing hub + pads) and labour is pushing it a bit. 1.5 hour max.

And not for a Sport or RS model...

Go to a tiger wheel and tire or supaquick for some quotes - they'll sort you out for close to cost.

Not the RS model. Pretty sure it's the front one's as the car doesn't break at all :wtf:
Why go to stealers for that?
Mother insisted she start there...

You should be able to do it for R1500 if you do it yourself for the regular models(not sport with big brakes), so you decide if its fair.

Also they are known to lie about this so at least check if they are actually worn.... How may K's does it have?

Hyundai wanted to charge us R3k for a freaking ATOS.
I got our local garage to do it for a grand total of R450, including better pads than what Hyundai wanted to put in.

Car has a scraping noise. Went in for a check. Couldn't find anything except the brakes apparently. Going to drive it today and give my opinion.
@OP, is that for all four corners?

Nope. Just the front. Just looked at the quote.

Its most likely the pads then as they have little metal tabs that make a noise when they are close to being worn out.
But its about 20-30mins of work if you know what you are doing and just the front pads should be under R1000.

Don't go somewhere else. It's a known problem on the Clio 4 and it can be replaced free of charge in some cases. Hammer them to get it fixed for free if she bought the car new and is still newish.
Reports of worn brakes at less than 20k km..

Nah car is at 40k Kms but will dig up some research about all this.

Quote seems par for the course when buying discs and pads at the dealership, have a look elsewhere.

But then again dealerships are always stupidly expensive, R4,500 buys me powerbrake front discs and pads for my Legacy, along with 3 cases of beer to keep me company while I install them. :/

I'll get you a case of beer to install these ones :p

Can I recommend a basic mechanics course for you if it takes that long...
