My local shop cannot tell me

I'm wanting to use Vodacom mobile data as a hotspot during Load Shedding

Anyone know?

~Thanks

Yes, depends if you 1. have connection to a nearby tower and 2 it's active i.e has backup power

the tower by me lasts for about 30 minutes into loadshedding then it dies. so no.

It will mostly work yes, but it is dependent on if the local towers batteries were stolen and not replaced or if the batteries are old and cant stay on the whole period or there was not enough time between loadsheddings for the batteries to recharge to stay on the whole next period.

So I can understand the local shop not being able to answer you as they would not know each towers backup power status.

As an aside, the MTN towers I connected to at my past and current residence stay online during LS... some small blessing in this Gd forsaken land.

YMMV

It will depend on the area and the tower. Many towers have been vandalized with their batteries stolen. In general Vodacom have backup power for their towers, but there are some that dont anymore.

It depends if they're changing batteries in their towers. Clearly MTN is not where I am, during load-shedding my phone goes offline completely. Useless bunch.

In my experience, Vodacom does not stay up during load shedding.
Voice and data both very problematic.

Not near me. It dies as soon as load-shedding it implemented and comes back an hour or so after power is restored. Vodacom at the Constantia Village Shopping centre say this is normal

Voda and Telkom stays on for up to 4 hours in my area during rolling blackouts. Not sure about other networks.

In my case service falls back from 4G - 3G almost immediately (20 minutes or so) and gradually drops away to nothing after about 90 minutes. Limited backup batteries available.

Generator no longer available -- long since removed because of a noise complaint by someone. Totally dependent on battery backup. The irony is now we put up with genis running all over the place at many homes --- noise is no longer a problem it seems.
