Are their phones still only single sim versions compared to dual sim stock versions and do they lock the firmware to only accept vodacom sims?

With regards to dual sim they still lock in afaik but carrier locking is not allowed in South Africa?

There's currently no regulations preventing them from doing so but in most (all?) cases the networks have voluntarily discontinued the practice.

Hmmmm telkom contract it is then, can't stand someone meddling with hardware they sell. I would go Cell C but they don't have the phone's I want, they seem in love with 5.5" and larger screens and that's WAY too big.

Just buy wherever offers the best contract and flash new firmware?

I've asked MTN Business about this before and this was their response: "MTN has requested for that option to be removed from the handsets, the reason is to stop users from using the MTN handset with a different service provider SIM."

Same goes for Vodacom.

They will however not carrier lock phones anymore, you're free to use any SIM you want.
