Niks, nada. nothing. Salary and that's it. Small company, so boss thinks he owns us, and we owe him.

@Lupus - Today the value meal in the canteen is brazed chicken hearts & gizzards... :(

That's the weird stuff (from the perspective of my palate) I said they can sometimes serve.

Ah yeah those, tripe and trotters will filter into the value meal sometimes. Though with some pap and tomato gravy it could be quite nice.

Yes a lot actually.

Free fibre
Free domain and hosting
R250 to spend on Mobile data and Airtime
Free coffee from the coffee machines, hot chocolate and teas as well as cereals with Milk.
A cooked meal each day at the canteen
2 pieces of cake every Wednesday

You're more adventurous than I am.
You only live once :-), when I was an on-road tech I tried a few things out and about, some I'll never do again and others are like eh. Might be why my wife says I have an iron stomach now and can eat dodgy things.

Standard big bank stuff:

1. WFH twice a week
2. 25 days leave, usual sick, family responsibility etc
3. Prime -2.5% (Fringe benefit tax rate) for primary residence and car loans.
4. Various support programs like mental health etc. Never tried them.
5. Equipment is generally all handled and provided. Only thing I got for myself was a nice screen for WFH. Working on just the laptop screen as a dev was painful. Could ask for a laptop stand, keyboard and mouse without issue for home use.
6. Usual bank provided income protection, life cover, pension that comes from your payslip.

Stuff that is going away:
Friday Pizza's used to be more common. Hardly see that anymore. WFH is scaling back steadily. More and more teams returning to full time. Suspect I will lose my 2 WFH days in the next year. Trying not to mind too much. It was what I agreed to when starting this job so can't complain much.
Year end parties are getting worse and worse
New division I work for is harsher on performance appraisal. Was lots of talk when we got moved that all would stay the same but now it looks like we are all being prepped for potentially smaller bonus's and perhaps even raises. That could become a huge issue real fast.

Some things are just not meant to be eaten.

I'll eat roadside if its brisket or chuck, something in that line, but don't come at me with the funny stuff.

EDIT: Or a lekker roadside stew, had that a couple of times.

Yeah my palette nowadays isn't quite like it used to be :-), but back in the day. If it was food, I ate it. I've had packet of dried crickets and worms flavoured like crisps :-).

After almost 2 decades of being a dev as my career, if I have only one screen I feel like I have one hand tied behind my back... if I'm only on a laptop screen it feels like the hand that is not tied behind my back is in a cast. lol.

Yep, it also serves as a second TV. Sometimes the kids are watching in our TV Room and we want to see something else. Got a mi box linked up to it and a speaker and now me and the wife can watch in our bedroom. Was a great buy. I still work with people holding off on that purchase and I think its crazy. Just get a decent monitor to work on!

Coolest perk I get is lack of consequences.

Same, except 28 days leave. And prime -2% for any subsequent properties.

Also Bankmed is far cheaper than the equivalent Discovery plan, despite being administered by Discovery.

Best of all I have an awesome boss. Gave me a lot of flexibility when I had some personal stuff to deal with. People don't leave companies, they leave managers...

Apart from the annual bonus, (not guaranteed), nada. These Turks Im working for are as bad as the Jews and Greeks. Most of these groups make horrible bosses.

I have considered this a bit, and yes, it does. Are they awesome, nice or basic? I am not sure where it fits in the scale. I will say this, these maybe minor things, but they all add to something that makes me feel special, loyal and wanted.
  • Contribution to retirement
  • Contribution to life insurance for me and spouse
  • Contribution to funeral benefit
  • 13th cheque is strictly subject to my performance and company performance (definitely not guaranteed, if we all work together, it will make a difference)
  • Annual and sick leave which is fair, imo
  • Access to a staff canteen (good breakfast, lunch and all day options) and coffee shop on site (there is a nice alternative 50m from our front door)
  • Flexible working hours (within reason) this includes some work from home (within reason)
  • Open plan but comfortable office conditions, there is a kitchen on all floors with all the favourite beverages (hot chocolate and espresso from a machine)
  • There is onsite secure parking, which is free (in Joburg, I prize this)
And then there are some other "perks" which cannot be underrated (my opinion).
  • A healthy working environment where we are all respected (I think of my wife's situation where she is loyal, hard working and professional in every way, and her boss treats her/others like crap)
  • Progressive environment where my opinion counts, where I am asked to positively contribute, guide or lead
  • Management (really senior too) who know who I am, listen to me, value my input, and will take time out to come say hello when they are in the building (no amount of remuneration can replace this sense of recognition and sense of belonging)
  • HR wants to know how I feel, their are several avenues to reach out if something isn't so lekker (this includes wellness and support groups, which are anonymous and free), they even run regular awareness discussions around topics such as physical and mental wellness, bullying, financial wellness, breast cancer awareness
  • There are several opportunities in which we are supported to give back to the community or charity
Some others.
  • I work with amazing like minded colleagues who respect me and value my contribution
  • My team leader (a really small team) is amazing, awesome (he may be junior to me (in years and experience), but he leads by example, works exceptionally hard, values my input, and never ceases to amaze with his work ethic
  • Not many pay days to enforced retirement, but I still feel like my every minute makes a massive difference to the people around me, long may this last
These are things that do not all translate into financial benefit. But heck, they make a meaningful difference to well being and happiness.

Self employed

So i can go out for coffee or sleep when ever i want to (not really but i can)

Otherwise i think people like me cant say much. You know who you are you know what im talking about.

Self employed vs Employed.. i miss fixed income sometimes but i like my freedome of time more.
