Dog fight brutality exposed

This was the front page story in the early morning edition (published before they'd had an opportunity to cover Nelson Mandela's death) of Friday's The Star. I would like to draw attention to this story since it is a shocking story which seems to have drowned amidst the stories about Nelson Mandela.

The story is about dog fighting syndicates in Atteridgeville. It tells of their cruel methods for training their dogs. In particular, they take bait dogs, tie their muzzle shut with duct tape so that they can't defend themselves, chain them down, and have their fighting dogs attack them.

The SPCA in Cape Town have been trying to stop these for years. There are a few arrests and convictions, then someone starts up again. Elsies River is such a place, and you can place bets too.

If you look at the spectators watching a particularly brutal dog fight, they are consumed by blood lust as if they had snorted a line of cocaine. This is what spurs it on, the money on the side is just for show

This animal brutality must stop. But like stopping rhino poaching, you need some sort of law enforcement, which unfortunately does not exist in SA
