Has anyone here had cataract surgery done on their dog? You know the one where they implant an artifical lens? One eye or both? How much did it cost? Results?

We considered it. Our dog only has one working eye anyway. At R26k and no guarantee of success, we decided against it. She is 14 already and otherwise in good health

Was considering it for my 12 year old Boston terrier, she's only got one eye as the other one she lost in a fight with a dog and it's got a cataracts in it, same result as Chris. There is only 2 places in South Africa that do it, one is in Cape Town the other is in Johannesburg, it costs R26k for the surgery and R5k for the testing before, results may vary and the older the dog the less chance of survival with the anathestic. So yes I do feel for my dog, but we guide her around the house if things change, she's also got this habit now of tapping with her paw as she walks it looks like she's counting.
As she will start tapping a few centimeters before the stoep step and the little steps around the house, she still bumps into things but she's now learnt to use her head.

We tried to go but were just too late. The staff at the Johannesburg Animal eye hospital in Fourways were absolutely brilliant. Good luck!

I kinda forgot about this thread, so I thought I'd close the loop here. We didn't get as far as even phoning around. Doggy suddenly started going backwards, the usual signs that the end is near - organs failing, stopped eating, etc. My old lady said her goodbyes (it's her dog) and had her put down. 13 years for a miniature poodle - not as old as they get but she had a good run and a very pampered life.

Strongs, always very, very difficult. Only thing that got me across the line was the social contract I have with them that I will not let them suffer. We now have no more pets and we are in no rush to get another.

Thanks folks. Not my dog though - mum's dog and since I live overseas, I've only seen the pooch a handful of times.

Can vouch for them. My Jack Russel had a splinter in his eye that they removed.
