Domain Pre-registration

Pre-registrations are exclusive to this registrar. They have not informed the general public via ICANN etc. This puts their clients at an unfair advantage when registering domains.

Why?

It's the same as registering a domain. Everyone has a fair chance and domains are registered on a first come first served basis.

@virtualk, To clarify, pre-registrations are not exclusive to us as a registrar, as the only operating ICANN accredited Registrar in South Africa we are allowing anybody (our clients AND anybody else) to pre-register for certain of the new gTLD’s that will be launching around the world. You can read the information on the website regarding pre-registration as well as the T&C’s for applying.

Pre-registration / pre-ordering does NOT guarantee availability of pre-registered / pre-ordered domain name. Once actual launch dates and pricing have been set by the winning gTLD Registries will domains.co.za notify pre-registrants of pricing / gTLD costs and other pertinent information. - from https://www.domains.co.za/gtld-preregistration/preregisterTerms

So this is just a bull**** marketing strategy. There's clearly no point if theres no guarantee

Damn, so I'm not going to get www.tablemountain.capetown? :(

Fudzy, I wish it was that easy, there are various processes in place, this extract is directly from the .capetown site “Yes. Governments, local authorities and various other NGOs will have the opportunity to reserve names as defined in the ZACR Reserved Names Policy. Premium names may be reserved through specific premium name providers. Pricing for reservation of names will be made public in due course. The ZACR will make public certain categories and their reserved names.”

Basically the government / municipalities will give a list of reserved names, NGO’s will also give a list of reserved names and the ZACR will select their own list of premium domains that they will auction off at a later date to the highest bidders.

Then there is also the Trademark Stage, the Sunrise Stage & finally Landrush

So I am pretty sure that tablemountain.capetown will be taken in one of the reserved lists above.

No Pre-registration service for new gTLD's is guaranteed.

The idea behind it is that you can pre-register for a domain (virtualk.capetown for example).
Before the sun rise period opens (this is the period where the registry offers the domains at a higher premium than the normal fee) We notify you ask you if you would like us to attempt registration of this domain at the higher premium with you pre-funding an account for the registration. When sun rise opens we push through all pre-registrations and try to get your domain. If we fail to do so, we then refund you the amount you pre-funded.

If there is more than one individual pre-registered for the same domain, we notify / offer it in order of pre-registration (so if the first person says no to sun rise, we offer it to the 2nd, 3rd, etc).

The next period is land rush. So lets say you said no to virtualk.capetown for the sun rise period and no one else has pre-registered for it and said yes for the sun rise period, we will then notify you come land rush phase and it will work on the same process as above.

The reason there is no guarantee is because you could pre-register for a domain which gets taken up in the trademark / NGO / reserved phase.
There is also a chance that your pre-registered domain might get taken in the sun rise period by another company who offers pre-registration services.

The service is offered as a opportunity for you to try and get the domains you would like first. The alternative is to wait until all the phases have compared (trademark, sun rise, land rush) and then see if your domain hasn't been registered by this point and if not, register it.

so its not pre-registration at all. Its a request to register a domain in advance. I think the term registration is very misleading in this case. pre-registration means u are actually registering the domain in advance.

Consumers are Advised Against New gTLD Domain Pre-Registration
New gTLD education and awareness resource, Newgtldsite.com, is advising consumers to avoid new websites offering 'pre-registration' for domain names that may be available through the ICANN New gTLD Program this year. These offers are often misleading and carry risks that outweigh any benefits of pre-registration at this time.
