Sadly this issue of domain name sales seems to still be trolled here bigtime by ignorant members. I tried to sell a domain name here few months ago and the thread got taken down because some ignorant members are still in the year 2000 and have no clue about domain values and domain trading. If I remember correctly I was selling the domain name for about R12 500, Comments form trolls were about the cost price of a domain name and how can I try extort money from members here and blah blah blah... the bottom line is that domain is now valued @ $2000 (R30 000) by Estibot.com - None the less I never sold the domain because my thread was taken down.

Did you register the domains purely to sell them for a profit?

See the problem?

Hmmm... 8 year necro - surely that's award worthy.

Basically I was going to develop the domain into a site (it's not a .co.za domain) but later decided to rather sell the domain as time isn't on my side and I have been juggling a few other projects as well. However I do own a portfolio of domains as well, One of my business models is domain trading, so I do often buy domains with the intention to sell them. I have paid as much as $3500 for a domain in the past with the intention to sell it down the line. I don't see the problem with domain trading at all?

No, you never sold the domain because you tried to extort money from people. How much does a domain cost? and you tried to sell it for how much? Just because what you are doing isn't illegal, doesn't mean you should do it.

So you are a domain squatter then?

Domain trading is a well known industry and there is nothing wrong with it. In fact i recently purchased a few dotGlobal domains to develop my business. But decided to sell one rather, as will not be feasible going forward.

In short, leave other kids alone!!

Why should I fork out x3 the price for a domain because you failed to use it properly? That seems like a mistake on your part, not mine. Let it expire and allow the next guy to buy it.

So you're also a domain squatter then...

There is EVERYTHING wrong with the "industry" as it were.... and the sooner the practice is outlawed the better.

Early bird catches the fattest .... You snooze you loose!! Just because I was ahead of the game, i have to give it all up by waiting for it to expire? I don't think so. You want to buy @x3 or x10, then be my guest.. No one is holding anything to your head!!

So by opening this thread you thought you won't get trolled? Bleedy domain squatter.

If you don't see anything wrong with domain squatting then I'm sorry, not worth my time to debate.
Please explain to me why organizations such as WIPO exists if there is nothing wrong with domain squatting?

The sole reason those organizations exist is because of jackasses buying up domains left and right as "early birds" and some form of regulations is needed.

I'm out.

You can't trust what estibot says about domain value. It's all about supply and demand. If you want to sell your domain name for big bucks, go to flippa and try your luck there, you will soon be hit with the hard reality that is supply and demand.

I sold a domain earlier this year, purely because someone asked to buy it, not because I bought it with the idea to make money off of it

Go sell it on one of the marketplaces. How many have you tried?

There are many, try your own site, Godaddy, Sedo, Flippa, Freemarket, blah blah blah, the guys at flippa will help you appraise and then have the community helping with that too. better yet, if they THEN think it's worth it, someone will buy it. And they will offer you what THEY think it' worth and not what you WANT. WANT and CAN HAVE are two very different things, you know.

Please don't come and call some of us trolls when you only have 41 posts.....

If your domain is valued at that, surely there must be some traffic to your site and you can sell it to any of your supporters.

If I want to sell my 2010 Hyundai iX35 for R140,000, but no one wants to buy it, maybe I should offer it for less, isn't that how it works? Can't come and complain that it lost value over the next year or two and now only valued at R120,000.

And why do you trust estibot if they only have 111 likes on Facebook? Flippa marketplace has about 27,000. Dont you think your chances would be better there?

If you mass-purchase domains just to try and sell them for a profit at a later stage, I'm sorry but you're an arsehole. This is exactly why I say domain registrations need to be regulated, this climbs out of control very quickly.

What have you got against trolls? :D

I do not see the problem, anyone can register a domain there is no law against it.

Being a p@#s and wanting to ask a charity or small business 10 billion millionty six ronds is what the problem is.

The only domain squatter here is a little small company called godaddy not sure if you are familiar with the industry, but go check em out and then take your rant there.

I don't think that's quite the same thing? There are many small players in SA who do the domain squatting thing, as far as I am aware they don't make big bucks from it either, contrary to what they expect. I'm with Customer1 on this, domain squatting seriously needs to be regulated locally. Far too many businesses registering domains that they have no interest in purely for the sake of possibly scoring a few bucks when they sell it off to a business/organisation/individual that actually has a legitimate use for it, or trademark.

For example. If you wanted to register the domain name for your small business or even your surname, only to discover it had been taken up by a domain squatter who has no use for it, but will then will sell it to you at a convenient rate of R10 000. That's not fair, that's where the market needs to be regulated. I'm not talking about web development, purely just the registration bit.
