I don't think that's quite the same thing? There are many small players in SA who do the domain squatting thing, as far as I am aware they don't make big bucks from it either, contrary to what they expect. I'm with Customer1 on this, domain squatting seriously needs to be regulated locally. Far too many businesses registering domains that they have no interest in purely for the sake of possibly scoring a few bucks when they sell it off to a business/organisation/individual that actually has a legitimate use for it, or trademark.
For example. If you wanted to register the domain name for your small business or even your surname, only to discover it had been taken up by a domain squatter who has no use for it, but will then will sell it to you at a convenient rate of R10 000. That's not fair, that's where the market needs to be regulated. I'm not talking about web development, purely just the registration bit.
Go to that company go watch what domains are owned.
You want any generic co.za domain go sell your left organ to godaddy
There is no individuals in the SA name space right now that posses a risk in terms of squatting domains.
I have hundreds of domains some are quite good we are talking the generic stuff like gay community or propertyloans etc
Not even do I measure as a blimp compared to go daddy and other South African registrars that snatches up domains before they are available to the general public.
It's very easy to see where the issue is all you need to do is choose 50 domain names that you would like to own, go to for instance domains.co.za enter it using their bulk search tool and then whois who own all the domains you just listed.
It will be godaddy, Aaron and 2 SA registrars.
Or me, but you'll need to be very niche to go into my territory
