Hi everyone, I need some help. I have a adsl internet connection from mweb and I recently purchased a domain from afrihost and I'm pointing it to me, I'm having trouble or actually have no idea on how to start using it, I want to hosta website and also have some software connected to a server at home, I'm using xampp as my webserver, how do I assign my domain name to my server and use my mweb adsl as the internet connection ?

I cant help you but you can try researching "domain on dynamic ip" on Google to point you in the right direction.

Also your upload speed of the ADSL connection will be the speed at which the outside world will access your website if you do get it right. I think it will be very slow.

Rather consider a cheapy hosting packing from an ISP ..... less complicated

Is there a specific reason why you want to host it yourself? If costs is a factor then grab a free hosting package here https://www.cybersmart.co.za/hosting.cgi I will help you set it up if you run into issues.

Otherwise you will need something lyk DynDNS or freedns.afraid.org and port forward on your router and and and and and, just a lot of effort for nothing.

Cloudflare + API based IP change also works and adds some layer of protection.

Hi, thank you for your replay, I wanted to host it myself due to cost and more control over my data, but, ITCynic pointed out that speed will be an issue as a result I moved on to cybersmart as you recommended and I'm in the process of setting things up

Hi,

If you want to do self hosting, i recommend you sign up with Amazon AWS. You can get a micro instance on the free tier for 12 months. Attach an elastic IP to it, and then point your domain to that IP.

That's cheapest and easiest way to host your own website. There are a bunch of tutorials floating around the web on how to do this. In the past i set up a wordpress site on an ubuntu instance, and just pointed my domain to it.

Easy to do, and plenty of help out there for doing it.
