Is there anything that can be done about domain squatters?

Just been searching for available domain names and almost every name I could think of has been used on one or other site. Frustrating thing is that the last post on any of those sites were 7 years ago.

Can 'they' not implement a rule stating that the name will get recycled should there be no activity for say 12 months, essentially the same way in which a mobile number gets recycled if not in use.

Guess that will never happen as Twitter, Facebook, Google, Wordpress etc.. will lose a quarter of their [ghost] users...

We have 2 sites in development being stalked by "wanters", one being a media giant in SA. You own a domain 3 months and they label you a squatter even though they own hundreds with no DNS.

If there is a site on the domain, there is very little you can do unless it violates some trademark or something you own...

People who own hundreds of domains with no DNS or no site... are squatters and they're the scum of the earth (and anyone who comes here claiming its some type of legitimate business are squatters themselves, and not this BS concept of a "domainer")

Exactly,

Although I believe that sites with public presentation should be issued to the search engines.

Then there is many other domains dedicated by the owner as customer portals via CRM's, ERP's, etc. which should not be searchable. This is only an example, but there are domains used to conduct personal business than be publically accessible.

Just because a site shows no activity does not mean that the domain is dormant. Many domains are registered for email only, for instance.

Sorry, I should have been a bit more precise. I meant to include usernames on social sites as well.

One will often find the right domain only to find that the same name on social sites have been taken/used. In many cases these sites have not seen any activity for years yet the name is blocked so essentially meaning that you either drop your domain name choice or you stick with it but then have a variation of such for all social sites.

I think I understand: twitter.com/mkfrost and owning mkfrost.com being an example?

Bit of OCD from your side maybe? I know quite a few popular domains that didn't get their preferred social username and is doing quite well.

Yes spot on..

You are correct to a certain extent as ghost user’s stays ghost users, activity is needed to sell and then again numbers are needed to gain capital... Also entity representation, combating trolls etc.

Don’t think there is much one can do, except should the social sites change their policies.
