Domestic wages adjusted

To those who find say the R2000 is so bad, say they increase it to R5000 and at that price its better to do everything myself and the laundry through a service at R2000pm. Now the domestic is unemployed and receives R0...

Which is preferable? R2000pm or R0pm?

This tired old argument. It's not as simple as that.
And just because people are poor does not mean that they should be taken advantage of. Why not pay your domestic worker R100 a month? I'm sure you'll find someone desperate enough to do it. Why not a child? R100 for a starving child is fantastic. Hell, at that price, why not get a couple? You'd basically be a hero

It is. Unfortunately, increasing minimum wage just pushes up inflation and hurts everyone.

No. It is not that simple. Sometimes that is the effect, sometimes the effect is the opposite.
There is quite a lot of research going into at the moment. UCT has some good research on the subject if you are interested.

This idea always leads to the simplest conclusion, if we had slavery, no one would be unemployed.

The scary thing, is there are so many people that exploit these woman, that they have to mandate minimum pay levels that most of us find disturbingly low.

Paying a domestic R2000 a month should be criminal. People that do that should be ashamed.

Not that I'm doing it, but it becomes a little more complicated when you pay R2000, and provide accommodation and food etc.

I actually feel like my domestic is exploiting me at the moment, she gets far more than the other ladys in the area (big mistake from my side), but she has also decided to become extremely lazy as of late, she definitely does not deserve what shes earning.

But I agree, many people give the bare minimum because they can. There should be some regulation in place.

Thats the other side of the coin though, because our laws make it near impossible to get rid of someone useless.

Wow, I pay mine 200 a day. Usually 8am to 2 30pm, and a lift to the taxi rank, free food. Wow, either I'm over paying or something wrong with those numbers. No wonder you have domestic workers beating toddlers.....

No, I would expect that most people would pay that or more. The fact that you see it as overpaying because it is higher than minimum wage is depressing

Most of us who are overpaying are not employing full time.

R200 PD is the going rate from my experience.

Also... I don't want a minimum job done... so I don't pay the minimum wage.

Unfortunately - demand and supply... there are a lot of domestics out there.. and they far out weigh the job market... Also - people see electricity etc going up and they feel that cutting the domestic from 4days/week to 3days/week is a way of saving a buck.

I'm not doing this.. but I have had this discussed countless times on 567 cape talk over the years...

Its hard out there and i feel for them.. but it is what is is :-(
