My helper has been off for three weeks out of the last 8 weeks. She suffers from diabetes and was admitted into hospital last Thursday. Unfortunately they had to do a partial leg amputation yesterday morning. We are devastated as she has been with us since 2010. Her sister phoned last night to let us know. I have been trying to find out what was going on but they have not been forthcoming until last night. She told me that my helper will not be returning to work, understandable under the circumstances. What is the way forward.

Contact the CCMA and find out what a fair settlement would be and start looking for a newbie

That's awful. Poor lady.

My domestic and I parted ways under amicable circumstances. I paid her a month's salary for every year she worked for me. I know its not marvellous but it's what I could afford. She comes in on the odd occasion and works for a day.

Should be a week per full year worked by law, so you were very generous

It more than fair, but yes, domestic workers are paid so little, especially if they only work one a day a week for you, that the end amount can feel like a pittance.

I once chatted to a domestic worker outside our complex, where the people she worked for just packed their bags and lefts. They didn't even bother to let her know, and she was also only earning R100 per day in Jhb.
Some people are scumbags.
