Cape Town - Residents of Saldanha Bay have been left fuming after access roads to the beaches were reportedly closed off and residents living close to the beachfront were issued with passes granting them exclusive access to the beach.

The move by the DA-led municipality has angered the ANC, which said the access control was reminiscent of the “dompas” black South Africans were forced to carry under the apartheid regime.

“We note that today is a public holiday and the festive season has already started,” the ANC West Coast Region spokesman Sammy Claasen said on Friday.

“This act can only lead to embarrassment, confusion and hostility. It is certainly not in the public’s interest to have unnecessary road closures at our beachfronts.

“We also noted that these road closures are only occurring in the Saldanha Bay area and not Langebaan. It reminded us of the restrictive law enforcement tactics of apartheid South Africa. This is totally unacceptable and as the ANC we denounce this act.”

The municipality declined to comment on the closure and the access cards, and instead referred the Cape Argus to law enforcement, who also did not comment.

Cape Town – The West Coast ANC have expressed their anger at the response by Saldanha Bay municipality’s mayor Marius Koen to claims of racist moves to restrict access to one of the beaches in the town.


Now it has called for DA Western Cape leader Patricia de Lille to suspend Koen after he told the Cape Times in an interview that “at times people arrived at the beach by taxi load, and bring with them noise, vandalism and drunkeness”.


ANC West Coast spokesperson Sammy Claasen said Koen’s comments implied that black and coloured people in taxis at the beachfront were vandals, noisy and drunkards.

This in normal in Ethweni for many years residents get permits and taxi park further away from the beach

People going from the Transvaal to Saldanha, acting like clowns and drinking a lot is nothing new... Sonja even sang about it.

The photo shows a vehicle access pass card for vehicle access for residents only.
Which, is understandable.


Doesn't say anything about no access to beach for any specific color eg Blue people or Green people banned from the beach.

I'm sure there are exemptions for disabled car access too (even if not a resident). If not, THAT I would be causing a ruckus about.
 
Funny, the ANC in Durban do the same thing for my suburb. Heck they go as far as to limit access to only those who live on the beach road and not the residents who live on the overlooking dune.

I see that the ANC are now calling black and colored people vandals, noisy and drunkards.
Which Koen specifically didn't.

Racist. Someone should take them to the SAHRC...
 
but even in durban u need a permit. they are just trying to control the situation. not everything is about racism guys come on now!!!!:erm:

He said the municipality was responding to calls by residents in the area who complained about bad behaviour‚ lawlessness‚ noise and vandalism over the festive period.

"I was informed by my law enforcement that it is mostly taxi people that come in. I didn't stipulate what race it was. I didn’t stipulate who was riding... I never mentioned which race it was‚" he said.

Anything the DA does angers the ANC. Anything the ANC does angers the DA. Tit for tat. Par for the course.

There is so much hullabaloo over anything and everything that a simple sneeze sparks unrest. When the real issues need to be dealt with, the public simply see it as more "cry wolf".
 
I dont know about any access control in Durban at the moment, but I can tell you that the city have lost complete and utter control over that whole promenade.
Chances of attracting foreign visitors to Durban are slim to zero.
Far too crowded
No where near enough facilities
No policing
No fokol.

You cant blame Saldhana for trying to maintain control. At least they being pro-active.
 
I lived on Snake Park beach for years and it was always the case, you were as a resident issued with access control disc and checkpoints blocking off the promenade were implemented during the silly season.

Nobody is denied access, its just during a certain period you were (as a non resident) respectfully asked to park further away due to the massive influx of people during that time period.

Durban lose control of it even out of season. The few times I venture down there its full of drunks, litter, piss etc. and for some unknown reason they block off most of the parking.

That multi-billion rand upgrade was for nothing.
 
SAN parks has this situation sorted in the Wilderness area, they just charge everyone who wants to use the beach and theres not really enough parking so most people have to park far away or live close enough to walk.

We don't have permits (we might have but I have not purchased one for a while now so not sure if it fell away or not) here but they do block off parking spots (cones in the road to control the influx) due to traffic congestion in holiday season. saps are also present and they check for alcohol which if found they confiscate. saps are run by the national government not local and the municipal area is anc run.

Think this is anc political noise as usual. Remember when those people got evicted from land in CT and the anc blamed the da? Well it was a national gov body (anc in charge) that got the high court order to evict them from the land. bunch of dumb fscks got egg on their faces but they don't care, just make more noise and the people lap it up.

Residents do get permits for peak days, been since 2011

To control traffic on the beachfront, certain roads leading into the beachfront will be closed and some will be boom gate controlled. On peak days, the boom gates will be closed and only permit holders will be allowed access to the beachfront.

Permits have been required in parts of the ANC's Durban for many years. The requirement of permits is policed by Durban's metro police under the management of the ANC. Just last week i was in Umdloti (eMdloti) and the Durban Metro Police were asking for a resident's permit to enter the beachfront.
