Well, you can help and tell me which ones are good for local charities? I've normally done Cotlands, but it has been a long time since I've actually had a surplus to send somewhere. I was wondering if we had feed a person for a week or "adopt" a pet at spca.

That makes more sense. There are plenty of local things to get involved with. SPCA is a good place to start in my opinion. (although I support BCR - Border Collie Rescue)

If you're looking to support international humanitarian crises, I'd simply support Gift Of The Givers.

I try very hard to help in my local community, We do Home of Hope for humans and Fallen Angels for animals.

Just stay away from the religious scammers and churches.

So what are the alternatives then? Of course I'm not looking into a hand-out culture, but someone can for example donating R250 to the spca, which in turn might at least buy 1x bag of food.

Don't work for what?

Helping abused kids get out of a bad environment? Helping families that have fallen on hard times back on their feet? Feed abandoned and abused animals?
They may not always work for poverty relief, but many charities run empowerment programs that do help.

No offense but that's a stupid statement.

Talking about the SPCA, they usually get a bad rap so I generally try and support other animal organizations, but recently we had a bad veld fire near us and after it was in control the SPCA stayed out until the early hours of the morning helping the wildlife in the vlei. Tortoises, feral cats, birds. I thought that would be the domain of cape nature, but they changed my opinion of them there.

Yeah and you will need to keep donating since the root cause is not fixed like https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/thr...in-one-year-some-moms-as-young-as-10.1150532/ likewise animals are not neutered etc. etc. Also unless you physically go through the books of the charity you will not know how the funds are used. They keep people in poverty. Then there's poverty porn like KFC, MCd's, Takealot etc guilting you into donating.

Like I said I keep it local so I can see the money/effort make a difference. If you give your money to an organization without doing your due diligence then you are in the realm of "a fool and his money" kind of thing. Those automated charity things are just ways for people to sooth their conscience with the least amount of effort possible.

We are all aware of charity scams such as the salvation army and so on, but that does not mean you should not give your time and effort into your local community or any charity.
